Climate change refers to the gradual shift in earth’s weather and climate patterns overtime. Global temperatures are on the rise and the patterns of rainfall and snow are changing extremely. These extreme shifts in climatic patterns are adversely affecting the ecosystem. Greenhouse gases that are accumulating gradually on the atmosphere are the major contributing factor to climate change. These greenhouse gases are emitted to the atmosphere from activities like deforestation and burning of the fossil fuels releasing gases like carbon dioxide. These gases accumulate on the earth’s atmosphere forming a shield of gases that traps solar radiations from the surface of the earth. This will have a blanket effect causing global temperatures to rise immensely leading to changes in climate patterns.
Greenhouse gases are mainly from human activities on earth like burning fossil fuels in industries, homes and agricultural activities. Burning fossil fuels at home for cooking releases a lot of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere since fossil fuels are used by the majority of the world population. In production of electricity large volumes of carbon dioxide are released into the atmosphere since its production is mainly involves burning of natural gas and fossil fuels. Green house gases are also emitted from the transport sector since vehicles burns fuel to provide energy.
The rise in global temperatures led to global warming which has extreme effects on the ecosystem. The rising temperatures brought about melting of polar glaciers which further led to rising of water levels in the oceans, which consequently leads to floods at coastal regions. Flooding causes loss of property and lives.
Water bodies like oceans and seas absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and from fossils from dead sea organisms. This carbon dioxide in large water bodies leads to overheating of the ocean waters that makes marine life decline greatly.
Human activity is the greatest contributor to climate change through agriculture, deforestation, transportation, and use of non-biodegradable wastes. These activities release greenhouse gases which leads to climate change.
