In the year 2010 3,000 people died in accidents that are caused by distracted driving. The U.S Department of Transportation is top at conducting activities that create awareness on the need to stop using mobile phones and stopping texting while on the wheel. The source talks about them holding national summits that ban use of cell phones and texting for those driving commercially, and is encouraging adoption of laws that are tough by states regarding this epidemic.

Cognitive distractions happen when on is absent minded when driving. Visual distractions happens when you take your eyes off the road. The source also acknowledges that distractions caused by technology such as texting and calling on a phone require the driver’s manual, visual, and cognitive attention and are therefore the most alarming. Statistics are that they cause accident risks 23 times more than when not distracted.

This source talks about the efforts conducted by Ford Motor Company on solving driving distractions. Ford became the first automaker that authorized a ban by the federal law on texting manually with devices that are hand-held when driving. Ford also conducted a research that found 86% of drivers who text as extremely dangerous and 93% of the population supports the ban. Ford also invested on simulator that is full-motion-based which creates a good driving environment hence reducing the risk of driving distractions.
