(1 - MC) Affirmative action perpetuates racism. (2 – MSC) Noble argues in ‘The Hamilton Right on Affirmative Action’ that, although it is well-intentioned, affirmative action does not work to stop prejudice and actually increases racial tensions. (3 – MSC) it is understandable that some white or Asian students may feel deep resentment towards black or Hispanic students who are at their college not through their own merits or intellectual gifts, but simply because of their skin color. (4 – MSC) Hamilton writes, “Affirmative Action most negatively affects minorities (Blacks, Hispanics, American Indians) because it creates more racism toward them and demeans their merit and accomplishments.”
(2 – MC) Condoms should be distributed in public schools as a way to prevent teenage pregnancy. (2 –MSC) Kerr in ‘Condom availability in New York City Schools’ argues that because of social embarrassment in stores and the cost of condoms, teenagers are discouraged from obtaining condoms to use when they have sex. (3 – MSC) Teenagers spend a lot of time in school, so it makes sense to make condoms available where access to them is easy and cost-free. (4 –MSC) Kerr writes, “In New York state, 30,000 females younger than age 19 get pregnant and 13,000 give birth.”
(3 – MC) The legal driving age should be raised to eighteen-years-old. (2 – MSC) In the editorial from the Portland Press Herald it is argued that allowing 16 years old children should be reflected on as one fatality a week in Maine involves a young driver. (3 – MSC) It does seem very contradictory that we allow 16 year olds to be in control of two tons of quickly moving metal, before we allow them to vote, drink alcohol or buy a gun. (4 – MSC) The editorial states, “Highway traffic fatalities remain the leading cause of death for young people both in Maine and nationally, and there is evidence that that a higher legal driving age could save lives.”
