This paper is a review of the training that will be conducted by the human resources department on a group of individuals who will be travelling to an overseas nation to conduct work for the firm in several capacities for a period of three months. This paper seeks to carry out an evaluation of the candidates, the nature of the destination, the nature of the mission that they will be conducting and the suggested training for the trainees and the assessments that will be conducted for the learning and its expected outcomes.
The Target Group
The group that will be targeted for this training will be conducted is composed of financial accountants and auditors. These is a group of individuals who are used to high levels of efficiency in the delivery of their professional services and have developed high levels of proficiency in their fields with several years experience in working under high pressure professional environment.
The group that will be targeted for this training is composed of American citizens of different backgrounds, but basically American. They are all American citizens who have spent a better part of their lives in the United States and are fully integrated into the American culture. They are all educated to a postgraduate level several financial disciplines and have practiced auditing and accounting with the firm for several years to rise to the level of senior associates. The group members are a talented lot, and a majority of them are certified public accountants. The only issue with their qualifications is that none of the members has any experience in working with the accounting and auditing systems of the host country which they will be conducting their work. The group targeted for this training is also technologically savvy to the extent of integrating technology into their work. All employ a technology based system in their professional work and have not experienced the use of manual systems in their line of work.
Another important aspect of this group is that it is majorly composed of middle aged men with a few women of the same age bracket. Most of them are family people, with school going children and this trip will move them away from their families for a substantial amount of time.
Nature of the Destination
The destination of the group will be in Africa, specifically in Kenya. The work that they will be conducting will be mostly office based, and will be in two cities of the country, Nairobi and Mombasa. Kenya is in the East Coast of Africa, and is a country with an estimated population of forty million. The primary languages in the country are Swahili and English though there are many other regional dialects spread throughout the country. Swahili is the language which is mostly used in ordinary life in the country and English is used mainly in official business. The country is in the tropics and for the period of their visit, it is expected that the weather will be mostly hot and humid. The culture of the country is indefinite since there are many communities that are spread throughout the country and have different cultural practices. However, in the cities that will be visited, the cultures are metropolitan and the main difference from home city that the group will encounter will be the difference in language. The English language spoken in the country is heavily influenced by local dialects and making sense of it may require effort and concentration.
The professional development in the country is high, and especially in the accounting discipline. The level of corporate disclosure in the country is high and the level of professionalism exhibited by both the private and public sectors is among the best in the continent. However, the accounting systems used by most firms are not entirely computerised and the use manual systems are not entirely rare. Kenya is at a lower level of technological advancement than the United States and many of the technologies usually available may be absent in that country.
The level of infrastructural development in the country is poor, and specifically the transport system is very wanting. The most reliable means of transport available is road and air, and it will be preferable that air be used to travel between the two cities. Reliable taxi services are available in both cities though such transport may be affected by slow traffic that is usually occasioned by traffic jams, especially in the rush hours.
Nature of the Mission
The mission of this team will be purely professional. The team will be expected to conduct financial compliance audits for a number of companies which are subsidiaries of the mother company for which they work for at home. It will be a tasking duty and will require undivided attention if it is to be completed within the scheduled time frame.
The team will be expected to have a working knowledge of the Swahili language. This will be essential to ensure that the team fits seamlessly into the society and culture that they will be working in. It will also be essential to ensure that their stay in the country is as easy as possible with the least number of complications or misunderstanding. Since the official language used in the country is English, professionally there will be no language barrier since it is expected that the professionals that they will be working with have a fine and working grasp of the English language. However, to fit into the life of the cities that they will be working in, knowledge of Swahili is essential since the language used in the streets is Swahili and a lack of knowledge of the language may make that stay there very difficult. Such knowledge of the Swahili language will need to be but not limited to the ability to fluently ask for directions, order meals in restaurants and ask for transportation services.
The training that will be conducted will be divided into two major stages. The first stage will involve the training of the team for the Swahili language proficiency and cultural understanding. The second stage will involve training the team on the usage of accounting system used in the host country which will be encountered in by the team in the host country.
The language training will be in several stages. The initial stage will seek to give the trainees an understanding of the history and cultural setting of the language. The second stage will involve learning of the elementary level of the Swahili language where the trainees will be expected to learn the basic vocabulary that will be used such as greetings, modes of addressing different demographic groups and simple conversations.
The training of the accounting system in use and which will be encountered will be the most intensive. Since the system used in the host country is different there will be a requirement of an in-depth analysis of what will be encountered. The accounting policies and systems that are applied will be studied in detail so that the trainees have an expert knowledge of the systems they will be working on. The regulatory framework that governs corporate disclosure in the country will be studied extensively and the legal framework analysed so that there is a clear understanding of the laws that govern the sector in Kenya. There will also be an extensive training of the tax policy and regulations that are in application in the country. This is the stage of training that will be allocated the higher amount of time.
Assessment of Learning
Learning will be assessed through tests that will be administered in several stages as the training advances. The assessments will be oral for the language part of the training and a combination of both oral and written tests for the professional and technical part of the training. It is estimated that the training will take two weeks, estimated at ten working days.
Data Collection Methods
In conducting assessment for the training, questionnaires will be used. They will be administered on the trainees and used to evaluate the progression of the trainees. The trainees will be asked to rate their understanding of the concepts that were being taught at the end of every training session in a scale of one to ten and any session at which the average score is less than half will have to be repeated.
Oral evaluations will be conducted for the language training and face to face interviews will be administered to evaluate the level of proficiency in the language being trained. Those trainees who seem to have difficulties in grasping the language will be given special personal attention by the tutors to ensure that they reach the appropriate proficiency level.
Results and conclusion
At the end of every training session, the questionnaires will be collected and the human resources department will evaluate them to gauge the level of understanding by the trainees. The results which indicate a problem will be tackled by either a repetition of the whole session to enhance understanding or by giving personal attention to the trainees who seem to have a problem in their progress of the training.
