- In “The Little Green Monster” a line describes the “spinning dark cocoon” in the woman’s body. Discuss what you think that represents and its connection to the monster and the woman’s reaction.
The story is about a young woman and a monster. As described in the story, the monster appeared from a hole and made its way to the house where the woman was sited. According to the story, the spinning dark cocoon in the woman’s body was her mind. The woman used her brains to harm the monster. When the monster read the woman’s mind, it got scary and the woman took that as advantage to torture the monster. The monster also realized that the woman had more knifes in the kitchen that she might use to defend herself. The woman tortures the monster and uses its weakness to frighten it away. She uses her mind to cut down the monster by speaking out every negative thought to the monster. The woman shouts at the monster by telling how ugly and rude it was. The woman then starts to paint pictures on her mind on evil things that she would do to the monster. She starts by thinking how she would pull out the monsters scales and cut its calves with a hot knife. The woman also thinks of how she will smolder the monsters eyes with iron. The monster gets so scary until it vanishes from the sight of the woman.
The dark cocoon spinning inside of the woman represents her hateful emotion that is forming inside of her. She deliberately thinks of all the cruel things in her mind because she knows that the monster can read her thoughts. The monster represents the people who are not attractive while on the other hand they are expressive and want a normal life and to be accepted by people. However, due to their facial abnormalities, they are mostly considered as monsters from inside and out. In reality, these people are heartwarming and become good partners if seen beyond their faces.
The woman represents the people who are beautiful on the outside, but their insides are full of evil thoughts and proudness. They do not think of others as humans and are the kind of people who bully other people just because they think the other person is not worth it. They can go to extreme lengths to make the other suffer and does not care about their feelings, but are only concerned with their own self. The woman, who is also the narrator, composes herself with bravery and begins to torture the monster in her mind. In her own thoughts, she is being brave and trying to save herself from the monster even when she knows that he had come to propose her and not hurt her in any way. Instead of luring the woman through wrong means, the monster is simply trying to be close to the woman with all the positive intentions, but the woman tortures him non-verbally, throwing insults at it until he disappears.
The same thing happens to the people that the monster represents. They are bullied and insulted by people even non-verbally, that they lose the strength to face other people and live their lives and eventually disappear.
