Crash is a stunning drama where the action and the remarks by the characters are proof of how words have upheld their position in shocking and disturbing our frozen society. Although the movie plot is based on the collision of cars, there is also the collusion of races. This is because of the use of the racism words that are uttered by the screen characters in the traffic jam in lose Angels during the time of Christmas. The paper provides an insight of the racism, power and stereotype portrayed in the movie titled Crash by Paul Haggis
In the Crash characters, in some scenes, subjected to victim and offenders in others and have unique and individualistic traits. Racism in the movie is portrayed by the delusion and ignorance rather than malicious personality. The act and remarks of the stereotype are practiced by both the racists and the victims in the movie. In this film there is homogeneity where individuals view themselves as being unique and Individualistic. This is observed when the black guy who robbed the car hits an Asian and calls him “Chinaman” in spite of him being Korean this tends to show that all Asians are the same and views them as less diverse group.
The film introduces the idea of correlational principle where a negative behavior by a member of a group results in attributing the whole group for that single behavior. For instance, when two black robbers robbed the white woman she carried the hatred to Daniel Ruiz, a Latino, who was fixing their lock because she thought the guy might break into the house and attack her again because he had tattoos on his body. People need to be educated well on both the history and the present use for tattoos which are associated with gangs so that an individual’s rights are respected and freedom of expression not subjected to judgment especially negatively
The movie is a representative of the Americans as it cuts across all the races in our country, and reveals some of the basic aspects that contribute to racism. The realism of race conflict shows that the film isn’t biased to one race and brings out the true nature of the government in matters related to race. It tries to show the social aspects and the interaction of races .Various aspects in the ordinary world contribute to creation of racism in the film. For instance, one character states that “We are all separated by metal and glass” symbolizing a sense of disconnection with other humans. An instance is when Officer Ryan intimidates Cameron simply because he can get away with it because he is a police officer with power. Religion is seen as a source of hate speech by becoming the source of verbal assaults .The character can chose either to do the right thing or do the wrong thing an instance is the St. Christopher the patron saint plays an a crucial role by reminding us that the divine is always there even when wrongs are done. Music brings more hate speech through its lyrics and tones by provoking the feeling of criticism especially of hate in the name of showing injustices, by digging dipper bringing ill feelings to the target group through the hates and “heavy” words used.
It is clear that racism, religion, corruption, stereotype, and power cause hate speeches and in turn conflicts. Racism is often brought out in characters who side line themselves on this ground. The film summarizes the American people in a typical social group. The film is generally a balance of all the races. The movie has indicated a real life situation of city tension where riches and poor, people from different walks of life might meet in traffic but, but they actually live in a different world.
