I am proud to say that I have been involved in many causes and have contributed to my community on numerous occasions, such as presenting Restorative Justice Skits to girl youth programs at church and leading demonstrations in Sparring exercises with girls aged 6 and older in Taekwondo, in which I currently hold a red/black belt. I have always possessed strong belief in studying and working hard and have been a devout follower of sexual abstinence. All these traits have inspired me to found and coordinate a girls’ group entitled Brilliant Girls Group (BGG), where my desire to help others would continue to be of service. This organization serves as a corner stone for a positive self image for freshman girls, aged 13 and 14. Being once a young girl myself, I know how easy it is for early teenagers to fall into the trap of feeling inadequate, not pretty enough, not clever enough, not popular enough. The goal that this organization strives towards is developing and enhancing positive skills that would in turn, increase the girls’ self esteem through mentoring and various group discussions, focusing on academic success and sexual issues. With the invaluable support of my school counselor, I was to meet freshman girls who voluntarily attended our 30 minutes to one hour meetings every day after school. I pointed out to them the relevance and necessity of making good, rational decisions and choices as far as their academic career is concerned and also the issues of sexual abstinence. What they really need is for someone to talk to them about these matters sincerely and provide a good role model for them, because that is how they will be well on their way to quality development and enhancing their skills towards raising their own self image. The experience has most certainly taught me a lot about myself and also, what it means to be a young woman in today’s society. It has influenced my goals by aiding me to comprehend and develop my own integrity, perseverance and I have come to realize even more fully that service to the community is a life time value I should always strive to improve.
