For fog to be formed there must be either cool air or high moisture in the air which all contribute to relative humidity that is at a hundred percent. Fog rarely forms in Tucson since the air is dry with no moisture and at the same time it is hot. Some of the types of fog that one is likely to see in Tucson are evaporation fog and radiation fog.
The two kinds of fog differ in their appearance and their process of formation. For instance, radiation fog is formed when the dry air cools rapidly at night apart from a slim layer touching the ground. Hence the appropriate relative humidity is attained and the fog cloud is formed just above the ground. Evaporation fog, on the other hand, is formed when water evaporates from a pool thus saturating the air just above it, which is normally cold. Once the air is maximally saturated, a fog cloud that flows towards the sky is formed above the pool. Evaporation fog can also form when we breathe in a cold morning since the warm air from the mouth mixes with the cold air outside thus saturating the air and resulting in a fog cloud. It can also be formed from exhaust of automobiles or from a factory that is fueled by gas. The vapor produced alongside the exhaust gases saturates the air outside thus forming a fog cloud. The two types of fog can be differentiated visually since the radiation fog is mostly witnessed at night forming as a thin layer touching the ground. On the other hand, the evaporation fog is mostly seen as ‘smoke’ that is streaming upwards above a pool of water in the morning.
