Mediation is word used in a broad spectrum. It is often said for a person who mediates; peace of mind is necessary. However, the mediation and peacemaking is interrelated to one another. When we say that the mediation is necessary for resolving interrelated problems worldwide or even personally, we limit our observation to the fact that satisfaction and peace is an utmost factor that comes as a result of the mediation. Mediation can be between family members, between colleagues working together and on broader perspective between countries on diplomatic levels. The role of mediator is acknowledged worldwide as disputes from the small scale like disputes between workers in a factory, working on roadside, working in some construction area to the international disputes, all need a mediator. Whatever the purpose of mediation is, the ultimate result should be the peace and satisfaction.
The question asked that is it necessary for the mediator to be able to mediate effectively, and does it apply to the principle of mediation/peacemaking? So the answer is” yes.” The mediation effects are well known and well understood. There may be some problems that need a proper solution and well defined approach towards its resolution as property issues, main commercial issues. For such problems, strong mediation is necessary for the purpose of keeping and maintaining peace. Mediator plays an important part and to keep peace, negotiation and communication are brought on the front line by the mediator. It is the principle of mediation and peacemaking that has worked worldwide in many dangerous and disastrous situations. When the mediator comes in between two parties for the purpose of peace, some principles are set. According to these principles, the parties those are seeking for the peace work according to the principles set forth. These principles can be viewed in the form of regional aspects, cultural aspects, bilateral communication and interests of both the concern parties.
When we talk of peacemaking and mediator both at the same time, we are mistaken at that point. Mediator resolves issues, but it is not necessary that all issues are resolved in the spectrum of mutual understanding and satisfaction. There are certain things on which sometimes even compromise is brought under consideration; however peacemaking keeps all parties happy in the end with the main aim of peace. Mediation may come across a point where some consider it a win situation for themselves and other may consider a loss but peacekeeping is the method leads to both parties ultimate satisfaction.
Let us see the principle of mediation and peacekeeping in international issues.
The end of the cold war between USSR and US after the fall of Soviet Union witnessed many mediators. For keeping peace, the mediators between these two countries showed the world that peace can prevail when a mediator comes forward and intervene. The Afghanistan, many African countries and many more countries are in need of a mediator nowadays for keeping peace worldwide. So we can say that for almost last ten to twenty years the role of mediator has been increased on the international level. The mediator importance has been known worldwide. There have been many surveys conducted shown the role of mediators for keeping peace. According to these surveys, by year 2004-2005, many international issues have been resolved by mediation. UN is the main mediator among many world conflicts (Whitworth, 2004). And since then, the issues are sought out by mediators and successfully implemented.
There are few international mediators that have achieved success. Organization known by the name of United Nations, others are regional/domestic level organizations mediating on global stance and even at the same time individual and independent states are also recognized as mediators in many cases and helped in providing peace.
If we study widely, we will come across world famous Philosopher known as Krishnamurti. He was a Philosopher and worked widely on the topics such as mediation, human nature and relationship of one person with other, peace of mind, and the changes that are taking place in the society (J.Krishnamurti).
He was of the view that religion affiliation, caste affiliations or even the national affiliations are not a matter that brings peace of mind in anyone’s life. Peace of mind can be attained individually, or as a whole when one is totally determined to get peace in this world. Krishnamurti is of the view that there are many disputes among people, nations, even among many teachers of same subjects, people working in same community or place, but that dispute or conflict should not be reflected in our decisions. From the very first man till today, men living in a state of some sort of dispute. Sometimes these disputes get so worse that even lives are taken on some disputes. So Krishnamurti is of the view that although man is facing conflicts and dispute through ages, and the peace is very difficult to achieve but yet peace is the only solution that can lead to prosperous world and healthy humanity. So Krishnamurti forwards our question that states that to mediate affectively one must be able to mediate, and this principle is applied on mediation/peacekeeping. Krishnamurti being the philosopher strongly seconds the opinion of mediation and peacekeeping for the healthy sustainability of humanity and society.
So we can ultimately come to the point that mediator having the property of mediation and thus the peace process prevails in the issues. But if the mediator is not able to mediate, the principles of peacekeeping can be achieved. The Indian philosopher Krishnamurti has also endorsed the point that mediator should be able to mediate o keep the principle of peacekeeping.
