After exploring all of my career options, I have decided that my Health and Human Service Center career will be in social work. I have also wanted to be a social worker as a way of helping others and my community. If someone is facing a difficult situation sometimes his or her social worker is the glue that holds that situation together. I understand that the field of social work is a vast one. Therefore, I will use this paper to focus in on my desired area of study in the field.
Reasons for My Interest in Social Work
My primary reason for wanting to become a social worker is to help people. I have a lot of compassion, which I will bring to the field of social work. I want to help people reach their full potential. When people are struggling with difficult personal situations, they may not be able to reach their full potential. My motivation as a social worker would be to help these people uncover their strengths. I find that this part of social work will be very rewarding.
Personal Drivers towards This Career Choice
My primary driver for this career choice is to make a difference in my community. As a social worker, if I work with individuals and make noticeable difference in their lives, it will make a collective difference in their community. A secondary driver towards this career choice is that I feel that I am qualified to assist members of my community. I have been studying for a career in this field, therefore, I am confident that I will be able to make value added contributions to the field.
Personal Connection to Social Work
My personal connection to the field of social work is my volunteering background. For the past three years, I have spent my Saturday nights volunteering in a soup kitchen. While there, I interact with families in need. One thing that this volunteer work has taught me is that these families are just like every other family with the exception of hardships that are holding them back. As a social worker, I will help these types of families overcome these hardships.
Populations of Interest in the Field
I am interested in working with the elderly and becoming a geriatric social worker. This is a group that needs advocacy and care to ensure that all of their needs are being met. For example, I could work with elderly clients at an assisted living facility if they feel that they are not receiving adequate healthcare. I will advocate on their behalf.
What a Social Worker Career Entails
A career in social work entails assisting clients with their issues. These issues could take on various forms. As a social worker, I will need to be flexible in my approach to each client since each person is different. Additionally, since I will be interacting with many different clients, I will need to be organized so that I could successfully manage their cases (Learn How to Become Staff, n.d.).
Skills and Abilities Necessary for This Career
The skills that I will need as a social worker are good communication skills and empathy (Learn How to Become Staff, n.d.). With the communication skills, I will be able to interface with my clients. Moreover, after speaking with my clients, I will need to record our interaction so that I could file it. My empathy skills will help me counsel clients, who are undergoing stressors in their lives. As a social worker, I will also need to have excellent time management skills, which I already possess.
