1. If I could design an ISU course that everyone has to take, I would design an Independent Living Course that would be housed in the General Admissions Courses to be taken by all freshmen students within the first semester of their entry into the Indiana State University (ISU). The course would cover instructional materials which include the following: (1) guidelines to support oneself financially; (2) effectively handling household chores; (3) time management; and an (4) open-ended topic which solicits most pressing concerns that students want to be addressed – something like a ‘how-to-do-it-yourself’ course. The instructors could evaluate the students in terms of defining learning objectives per module and gauging the students’ performance in terms of effectiveness in achieving these defined goals. For instance, in the module on time management, the instructor could require the students to prepare a schedule of activities that shows how to prioritize tasks: academic schedules, housekeeping, and social or family endeavors. Students who are able to design the most effective time management schedule based on a defined rubric would be graded accordingly. The course would benefit me and all ISU students because not all students have been appropriately and effectively apprised with the needed knowledge and support to learn skills for independent living. Since eventually, as young adults, all would live separately from our parents, the course would be advantageous as providing the relevant inputs that would assist facing life independently from others. Through the course, I would like to learn things that adults unexpectedly face and yet; had to contend with; such as: how to maintain a current account; how to maintain a credit account; basic troubleshooting techniques at home (what to do when you sink suddenly gets clogged or how to choose the best consumer products within a limited budget). This is a practical course that all ISU students could learn from as we all face life with optimistic outlooks and within the current resources and means that is available.
2. The response of creating a life materials course was actually synonymous with one’s proposed course. The only difference was that my proposed course was more structured and focused on an independent learning program. The life materials course is also commendable in terms of signifying the thrust on teaching college students to eventually live on their own. Thus, all the questions were aptly responded to; except that the last question which asks for the reason why this proposed course would be beneficial to students was not appropriately provided.
