Musical Therapy is a health-based programme that combines music with behavioural science to deal with physical, emotional, cognitive and social needs through the use of music interventions. The musical therapy can be used in its different forms, including composing, singing, discussing, listening and improvising, purely based on individual needs to achieve goals within a therapeutic relationship. Musical Therapy is performed by those professionals who are certified with an approved music therapy programme. This therapy is much more than just playing records in nursing homes. The music has to be appealing and appropriate so that it directly hits the patient mind and start fixing the problem at the first go. Thus it is a necessity for a therapist to possess the quality of a good music listener, as it gives the therapist an in-depth knowledge and helps in designing sessions using all the facets of music - physical, emotional, mental, social, aesthetic and spiritual. This also enables the therapist to guide patients through exercises and practices by preparing, conducting, evaluating and documenting sessions based on necessary background information.
Musical Therapy makes an impact on biological events, such as emotions and memories, which results in influencing the perception of pain. Music possesses different characteristics and has the ability to make people feel happy, amused, sad, fearful and even irritated. However, it is not necessary that two people react in a similar manner after listening to same sounds. The music should have affective, cognitive and sensory attributes that are being used as tools by music therapists to reach patient goals. So keeping in mind the personal attributes of a patient, the therapist has to design its sessions and hit the right chord.
