What I observed
During the whole observation, I have observed a lot of things. One of the things that marked my existence at the Soup Kitchen was how everyone professionally worked to deliver world class services to those people who need topnotch services. In this type of field, customer service is not really enough to please the customers.
Expertise, experience and skill are two of the most important traits that one must consider before entering this particular field because they are really in demand. I have seen chefs working to the best of their ability to make delicious foods out of their ingredients that would surely delight their customers and increase the reputation of the food store.
Why was the situation out of your comfort zone?
While I was on the soup kitchen, there were frequently problems that the whole staff encounters. These problems do not only happen a single time each day; it actually occurs a couple of times whenever I am on duty. I can say that it is really a daunting task to satisfy the customers’ tastes when it comes to food and it definitely is not easy to be in charge of a kitchen that is responsible for taking care of a lot of orders.
Customer service is one of the top priorities above anything else and it is pretty understandable why it is like that. I am pretty sure that staying inside a busy and competitive soup kitchen was one of the busiest places I have ever experienced and it is definitely out of my comfort zone to stay in a place like that. I usually see myself busy the whole day that I barely have the time to take a break and talk with my colleagues about their conditions. Nevertheless, it was a fruitful experience.
During the course of my stay at that place, I have learned so many things. Customer service is one of the most important things that I really have to value. As long as the customers love me and what I am doing, there is a great probability that my business will thrive and patrons will keep on buying whatever I am offering to them for sale.
I have also learned the value of time during my stay at this busy soup kitchen. Time management is indeed a key in order to conquer business and lots of orders. As long as one knows how to manage his or her time, everything will be ok.
Change in Perceptions
My perception about field practice actually changed the moment I saw how busy and almost dreadful it was to be inside a fully operational soup kitchen. Everybody seems to be doing their best in order to create the best soup for their customers and I think that it’s a positive thing and learning that I have to keep.
My perceptions about responsibility have also changed during this exposure. I realized that if you were assigned to a specific task, you have to do whatever it takes to finish it no matter how hard or impossible it may seem to be.
In this program, I have encountered a lot of people. Each people have different behaviors, preferences, likes, dislikes and ideals. It is really a good thing that I was exposed to this type of thing for it will be four times hard in the future if I wasn’t exposed to these types of things. I have noticed that people would really want to get the most out of the money they paid for a service or a commodity. Normally, a people would wish that everything is as cheap as they were used to be but that really seems to be impossible at this moment.
During my stay at the kitchen soup, I have seen various people with different personalities. Some have strong and others have weak personalities which I think is just completely normal since there are a lot of factors that could influence how an individual may grow and behave when he grows up.
According to some experts, social inequalities between the poor and rich people really do exist at some point in the society. Well, I think I was able to have the chance to witness how people from these two groups are being treated in this society.
I have encountered a lot of discriminative cases during my whole observation. Most of the discriminated people were low-income and non-taxpayer individuals while the other who is rich and noble is often treated way superiorly.
Being Socially Conscious
Being an observer indeed helped me in a lot of ways. First, I think that because of those exposures, I would finally be able to distinguish what’s right from what is wrong; a thing which I wasn’t able to do well in the past. Thanks to the social inequalities that I have seen, I can already see a brighter picture of how society is really supposed to be.
Traits that I need to exhibit
I realized that to be able to help people who are underdog because of their wellness and wealth, I should exhibit a patriotic and compassionate personality for these people. I should try to help them out the best way I could think about.
I have also realized that I need to be more realistic in dealing with things and problems such as this one because if not, I would most likely end up being an unbelievable man just like everybody who attempted to help abused people before. It is never an insane idea to help people who are obviously in need and discriminated.
Steps for Improvement and Growth Areas
First of all, there really isn’t much to improve beside that attitude of the people who serve peoples who are hungry and tired of serving the country. During my Soup Kitchen Observation, I could say that for the services to be more effective, the food has to be served equally for the foreigners and for the natives who eat at the same spot where I work at.
This way, racial discrimination and other moral issues could easily be prevented. One personal area where I think I should improve on would be my communication skills because communication is a key to establish good relationship to different people no matter what part of the world they came from or what nationality they have. All humans have to be united once and for all even if what are at stake are just small things.
