Holes, an American comedy-drama is the Walt Disney production released in the year 2003. The movie is based on a book published in 1998 by Louis Sachar with the same name. The novel has won the National Book Award and a Newbery Medal. The story of the movie is adventurous which has the touch of fantasy. The movie is centered on a young boy Stanley Yelnats IV, who believes that all men in his family are cursed. The boy was sent to the correctional facility of Camp Green Lake in the middle of the dessert. The charge against him was about stealing a pair of sneakers which was quite unjust.
At the Green Camp, the boys were punished to dig holes of five feet depth. Each day Stanley Yelnats has to dig a hole with his fellows. The warden of Camp Green Lake, Sigourney Weaver thinks of this punishment as a character build up for the boys. The Counselor Pendanski (Tim Blake Nelson) was a noble and soft hearted person but the Mr. Sir (Jon Voight) was insensitive person. Soon, Stanley realized that there is something hidden beside the whole idea of digging as the Warden Walker is so curious about what the boys found in digging. In the climax, it is found out that Warden wants the boys to dig holes to find a treasure of bandit queen Kissin’ Kate Barlow (Arquette).
The stars of the movie are energetic and appealing especially the main character Stanley who with his soft face equally faces the challenges. ‘Holes’ was successful in attracting the teens and elders too. Under the direction of Andrew Davis, the movie captures the audience with the elements of adventure and suspense.
