The term, ‘Serial killer’ is used for anyone who assassinates others in a sequence in different incidents. Usually an incident is known as incident of serial killing when the number of victims exceeds three or more in a limited period of one to four week. These killings are executed in brutal manner and victims are usually unknown to the serial killers. There are various reasons of serial killings right from revenge to fun and other reasons. This paper intends to discuss serial killers, various reasons and consequences of such killings, along with discussing several other related aspects of the subject matter.
/> Serial killers are dangerous, brutal and possesses distorted thoughts but it does not make them dullard or less efficient than others. In several cases, it has been found that serial killers are more intelligent than others and their modus operandi of committing offences is well researched. Serial killers, in a number of cases are found to be over intelligent with exceptional IQ’s and additional skills. These smart serial killers present tough challenges for police and other investigating agencies and even there are cases that remain unsolved. They may appear exceptionally attractive and in order to lure their victims, they use their appearance, skills and mental power (Cassuto, 2009).
According to crime classification manual of FBI there are mainly three types of serial killers i.e. organized, disorganized and mixed. Even agency like FBI believes that serial killers who fall in organized category are very smart, brutal and very dangerous (Hickey, 2010). They are skilled, intelligent and it is difficult to catch them because of their modus operandi. They control the crime spot and leave no evidences (Federal Bureau of Investigation).
Serial killers of Disorganized and mixed categories are comparatively less intelligent and also they are predictable. Catching them is comparatively easy as their modus operandi is not smart like organized serial killers and they are likely to make faults by leaving evidences (Froeling, 2007). These serial killers are in bigger numbers and also are responsible for a larger number of all serial killing cases.
Several incidents of Serial killings suggest that serial killers have more than a few things in common and the personality of serial killers is approximately same. There are various types of serial killers and each one of them has his own reasons to take human lives. These reasons may be common or they may be different but the psychological as well as social situations of serial killers are generally similar (Ramsland, 2006). It has been found in several cases that though serial killers kill people when they are grown up but such traits are developed in their personality since their childhood.
Revelation of cases, biographies, autobiographies and diaries of serial killers suggest that they suffered a lot in their childhood due a number of reasons. Bad parenting, domestic violence in their early life, child abuse and several other factors including social factors are some common things that serial killers face in their childhood. Such difficulties take their innocence away from them and they become different from others. Their dissatisfaction and bitterness distort their thinking and affects their personality in such a manner that they indulge in heinous offences like killing people in order to release their frustration and satisfy their ego.
Sociologists, psychologists as well as experts from criminology suggest that when a child faces hardships in his childhood, he or she becomes insolent. When a child is neglected, he gradually develops his own world of flight of the imagination in order to run away from the real world. In his created world, he controls everything without any kind of intervention. Such child feels a sense of detachment from the society and this feeling grows with time as the child grows (Chalmers, 2009). Such children may reflect their anger, detachment and feeling for the society in different forms of crime, may be like a serial killer.
Reasons of serial killings may be several and these may vary according to personality, choice, thinking, capacity, and situation of a serial killer. Generally serial killers commit crimes in order to show their dominance and satisfy themselves. Majority of serial killers commit murders that are related to Sexual assault and rape. Usually Serial killers choose weak victims in order to easily overpower them (Rolling and London, 1996). Serial killers like only their dominance in their world of fantasy and weak targets satisfies them because they can do anything with these victims without facing much resistance.
In number of cases, it has been observed that serial killers killed people just for thrill. Serial killers cut and beat their victims and used to enjoy their pain and sufferings. Such pain of victims probably stimulated these killers and they killed them later. Sex or any other gain is not involved in these types of murders. Serial killers hatch a conspiracy and execute their plan through a well planned strategy in such cases. They follow their victims for several days and when they find appropriate opportunity, they just execute the crime. In such cases, victim is usually stranger and gets killed without any fault on his part (Gibson, 2004).
Monetary benefits also are a major factor that induces serial killers to kill several people in a sequence. People with criminal minds are found killing several innocent people just to gain their money and other valuables. This category of killers targets their known people including family, relatives, neighbors and friends who easily rely on killers without even assuming about their cruel intentions. Such serial killers are more predictable and their crime is visible prima facie.
A number of serial killers have been found killing people without any reason. They reveal that they killed people just because they also wanted to feel how it feels to killing somebody. Some of them admit to be influenced by violence in movies. Serial killers also killed people to feel high (Thomas, 2010). There are several other cases that suggest very trivial and bizarre reasons behind the killings by serial killers.
In modern times, incidents of serial killings are increasing and becoming more dangerous. Serial killers use latest weapons, tricks, technology, devices to trap people and kill them. it is easy for serial killers to trench police by using modern tactics that makes them very dangerous and creates challenges for the police and other investigating agencies. Their latest version is more harmful for the society as societies are open and it is not that easy to differentiate between criminals and normal people.
Serial killings are not new to our society and they have a long history. These serial killings are being committed since a long time and probably it is not feasible to put a curb on these killings. We will have to introspect in order to find a solution of this problem because serial killers do not come from mars. Serial killers are people from our society and they exist because our society failed to give them what they deserved. Their brilliant brains were not properly used that is why it was misused (Waller, 2010).
It is a settled fact that almost all serial killers, in their childhood were ill treated and abused in some way or another. It clearly shows that society failed in fulfilling its duty towards them and they were deprived what they deserved I their childhood. Now when such children are grown up ad committing heinous crimes, society feels threatened. A simple question that comes into my mind that does the society has a right to expect good behavior or decency from someone who was not given the same when he or she needed it most.
After having observed detailed analysis of the subject matter, it is good to conclude that serial killers are threat to our society. they are our own people who were ill treated, misguided and now turned into monsters who kill people without any reason. Though there should be no leniency while punishing them for their crimes but only punishing these killers has not worked and is not going to work in future also. There should be an open and broad discussion on this issue. We can not afford to remain silent or ignoring this issue because innocent people are losing their lives. Some very effective steps must be taken to prevent such killings and this is not the duty of any government alone but this is the duty of society and every individual who want to stop such killings.
