In the study A Study on the Development of Reading Skills of the Students Having Difficulty in Reading: Enrichment Reading Program, done by Hayati Akyol, Ahmet, Cakiroglu and Hayriye Gul Kuruyer, the researchers wanted to determine the difficulties students had in reading skills and what could happen if an enrichment program was introduced to help the students overcome their difficulties. The researchers used three students from the fifth grade who had difficulties in reading.
Before starting the exercise, the participants exhibited different levels of difficulties. Some could not write words properly during the dictation exercises, and also could not organize their opinions properly. During dialogue exercises, they could not communicate well as they could not properly organize their ideas. The program, therefore, was used to help them improve their areas of inadequacy and check out whether it could be effecting in improving the learning skills of students. Different exercises were assembled in order to be used in the experiment. The target was to check out whether the program was effective. It took about eleven weeks to complete the exercise. It had a total of 75 hours which translates to 40 minutes for every class.
When the study was concluded, the researchers realized that the enrichment reading program helped improve the reading skills of the participants. The results of the program indicated that there were less mistakes committed by the participants, the time of completion of their exercises improved greatly. Other skills that the participants improved on included word recognition and reading aloud skills for the participants who had problems before starting the program. Their metacognitive strategies also improved and, therefore, it can be argued that the exercise had a positive impact in their reading and learning skills.
