In the video “The tragedy of the commons”, the economists refers to the common pool resources as being good for me, good for you or bad for us when referring the usage of the common goods. In the video, the common goods refer to the goods or products whose use among the individuals is not restricted. When the economists refer common pool of resources being good for me, it means that my ability to use the common pool of resources without being restricted is beneficial to me. This is because it enables me to enjoy maximum benefits from the resources (The tragedy of the commons). When they sing that the common pool of resources is good for you, they mean that the resources when used by others they are as able to satisfy their needs, hence the common pool of resources being good to others too. By the pool of resources being bad for us, it means that unrestricted use the resources results to overexploitation of the resources and they may get finished permanently or temporarily. That means over exploitation of common resources without resources is harmful consequence for all because of inability to achieve sustainable development in the long run (Baker, 2013).
In reference to the fisheries as being one of the common pools of resources, the problem facing them is over fishing and their destruction through man activities such as pollution. The problem created can be solved by proper regulation on the manner in which these limited resources are utilized. The problem facing pastures a common pool of resources is over-exploitation and thus the pastures needs to be managed too to avoid degradation of the ecosystem that can result to disastrous effect on the ecosystem. Proper regulation entails setting laws, taxes and number of animals to be grazed per unit area, and hence ensure that the pastures do not get exhausted. The atmosphere is another common pool of resources which when the use not properly regulation results to its degradation through pollution by emission of the greenhouse gases. The regulation will entail making paying to the government a certain amount of money in reference to the quantity of greenhouse gases released into the environment. In the video, the problems arising when the common pool of resources are exploited, however, when not controlled, it results to their exhaustion. It is important to regulate the use of the common pool of resources guarantee sustainable development.
