His expensive long chase limousine car hooted irresistibly at the company gate as all staff and junior employees ran helter skelter to their work stations- an absolute monarch he was. No one could refute the obvious: Arogania was damn angry and any one found along his way would go home for ‘negligence and utter laziness’.
Arogania was not the type of a boss anyone could expect at this century. He exercised power absolutely and ruled the company with an iron hand and to him; power was not a relation between forces as anyone would expect.
The arrogant and adamant boss was always prepared to do evil as long as he believed that good will come of it. Machiavelli 1469-1527). Therefore, needless to rethink, the humble and hardworking watchman would take kindly or leave, his firing letter was out, in fact owing to urgency of time, he was fired orally.
He flung the gate open by himself and met Jim on his way rushing to open the gate. Jim had a running stomach stemming from his forceful ejection from his rental due to delayed salary. However, all he met were slaps and kicks from Arogania. To Arogania, power was not a social contract between the rulers and the ruled (Hobbes 1588-1679). For this reason, he exercised power with no relation between forces (Michael Faucault 1980s).
This was a global women day celebration and by virtue of natural rights, all employees were to be exempted for a holiday. He initially wondered loud why men needed this holiday anyway but promised women a consideration come the day. But women needed their men by their side-this was an obvious challenge for him but it was only suggested. No one, not even me, his personal secretary would dare challenge him on these grounds. His mastery of Weber’s claims that power is not a property of individuals but a relationship was not the best.
He packed his car and called for an urgent parade, just to announce the annual general meeting for all staff and employees. No memo was issued in advance. This did not shock anybody because this was his way of doing it. This he did in a charismatic and chidish manner. He ran the company like his family in the traditional way and always asserted vehemently that not everyone can possess power.
No question was sparkled to the imprecise monarch. No one would be daring enough to do this. He noted a slight hesitation the he thundered: “who will follow Jim?” I could not hide my fears owing to these job challenging moments. On top, I had taken a secret forceful oath of allegiance to him, being his closest confidant. Arogania was a master of it: one dimensional power and he always told me that at home, his entire family subdued to him like the Pharaoh. For sure, power is not limited to observable behavior (Luke S. 1974).
Off we were, no short cut, no holiday, no malingering-straight to the hall. He was already there and this alone rewarded us with no snacks for the meeting.
Nobody talked or even moved after sitting. All one could here were ‘noises’ of breath and his thundering voice. His first statement, “hail to our women for this is your day…” he continued his endless praises for women.
Arogania knew very well the fruits of womanization that power had brought right beneath his sniffy nose. He had twined himself around women like tendrils and grapevine had it that the first qualification for any woman job seeker was to strip herself naked in front of him…or see the door. These were his illegitimate political tactics. This was a true replica of the Machiavellian palace.
Then the time for the second most feared agenda: “evils committed” and as the secretary, I had to read past records of ‘culprits’ who were to face the disciplinary committee for respective charges. I must admit that I had neither the intention nor power to persecute the fellow innocent employees but was compelled to read out their names for my survival. Arogania had all the power at his discretion. He was a possessor of power, wealth and celebrity (Wright Mills 1970: 13). He was in charge of all formal and informal decision making.
As I read out the names against the charges anticipated, I remembered the bully nature of Arogania he one day subjected me to. I had “erroneously” forgotten to turn up for a date with him in a posh hotel, where he wanted me to sleep with him for a whole weekend…but I noted that beautiful women formed the majority in this list.
The structure of this company was centralized. Only the inner core and the outer most fringes that comprised the subordinates and perpet powerless leaders like me. Power was not reversible here, not at all! The devil was always here, roaming in the compound with his nose sniffing in the air, bailing for discernible culprits who could face his wrath-at least every day. If he felt tired, he could snore with his coffee right in front of him, with the personal assistant fanning him, despite an expensive electric fan fixed in his meticulously painted office. Truth be told, I was fathomed at the asymmetrical nature of power in this company.
No rational-legal power was exercised here. The tyrant required no advice as he believed his wealth of experience would salvage any unsightly situation in this company. Non-decision making prevailed here with no criticism but a lot of rumors of unsatisfaction.
Arogania had the ability to influence all the decisions made by everybody at individual or departmental level. I vividly remember a day when all the employees threatened to put their tools down for disproportionate and megre salaries. He constructively cheated the then ‘Human Resource Manager’, Ashton Ashley, to ‘talk’ to the employees, a majority who happened to be of his race. After things came back to normal, he used coercion to pluck Ashley from the company and vehemently accused him of inciting the loyal employees.
But stories were also narrated of Arogania’s father, the man who founded this company. This man devolved power in the company to the three dimensional level. Every body had a say as far as decision making was concerned. He believed that centralization was not necessary to maintain order and instead, went for devolution. The company at those times was rated among the best performing companies in Europe. The father believed in delegation, which Arogania buried deep down and locked up in the casket of ‘never’.
The meeting ended in disarray and discontent when Arogania called upon Mishy, arguably the most stunningly beautiful woman in the company, to join him in his office in the celebration of day of people with honorable conduct- the leader of the homes. Nobody could however dare to express his (or her) discontent at the sight of the monarch.
He made a call to me, urgently summoning me in his office to re affirm to me the seriousness of the verdict he had just issued last. In a loud command: “let nobody cross the gate! Make sure the deliveries are all ready by 4 pm. This calls for great commitment from everybody…I mean, everybody must work, no holiday at all”. This he said as Mishy breathed sound, her heart almost breaking her chest. She knew what she expected on this day. At least today, he delegated his honorable duties to me, and should I fail, which of course I did, I was thrown out of the company for being a green horn with reckless hands.
The employees could not work. All they did were complaints. They lamented the high disciplinary power, the contingency, centralization, destructive charisma, their powerlessness, the brutal bully character of the boss. They said the monarch’s rule of iron was best a preserve for his family and far worse, his lack of respect for their wives and girlfriends who he lavishly slept with and they could not raise even a mum of complaint for fear of extinction from the company. They said this was enough and as the boss was busy reaping from Mishy’s orchard they set the company on fire and this marked the end of Arogania’s era of tyranny and monarchy.
