Why I Selected Pharmacy and How the Doctor of Pharmacy Degree Relates to My Professional Goals
Since childhood, I have always had a fascination by the way the human body functions. This enthrallment triggered an intense interest in studying medicine or any relative field to medicine. In particular, I have had much interest in pharmacy. As a career, pharmacy draws heavily from Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics. The urge to pursue Pharmacy obliged me to continue with my education in the United States after graduating from Chemivtsi National University with a bachelor’s degree in Foreign Languages. I enrolled at Philadelphia Community College; to undertake the pre-pharmacy courses that were requisite for understanding the fundamental principles of Pharmacy. This provided useful insights about life and health on different levels.
Biology has helped me to understand the general body make up as well as the functioning of the entire body system. On the other hand, Chemistry inculcated in me invaluable skills related to writing and illustrating results from experiments. From these results, I have always been able to make correct modifications, evaluations and ultimately, draw accurate deductions. These are important for critical decision making especially with regards to pharmacy. Coupled with an interest of logical application of scientific thinking in problem resolution, this knowledge provided useful insights in to the field of Pharmacy.
My first job was data entry in Vertical Screen Company. Although this is not directly related to pharmacy, it taught me important life skills that are fundamental in professional practice. In particular, I gained invaluable knowledge pertaining to the importance of upholding accuracy. This is pertinent during prescription of drugs and when handling medicine in general. Relative to this is the fact that I am detail oriented, and working in the field of data entry helped me to enhance this skill because of the need to double check all contents to the letter. The skill is of paramount importance in the field of pharmacy because of the implications of drug administration. In this regard, double checking all contents ensures accurate administration of the same. Furthermore, pharmaceutical content is comprehensive and requires utmost keenness in its application.
Together with my husband, we established a small business- Avis Budget Car rental Agency in central Philadelphia. This has been successful due to the excellent managerial skills that we exercise. Over time, it has taught me the art of problem solving. At this point in time, it cannot be disputed that the current corporate environment is dynamic in nature. The complexity of emergent problems is high and requires clear thinking and application of relevant problem solving skills in a timely manner. Using these skills, I can effectively solve wide ranging problems that characterize the field of Pharmacy.
