Democracy benefits the citizenry because it safeguards their interests. The public exercises real power through the representatives they elect and hold responsible. Democracy is based on the principle of equality. This is a benefit because all members are treated equally according to the law and receive equal social, political and economic rights. Democracy also provides stability, efficiency and firmness in a government, because it is based on the will of the public.
Democracy is, however, not danger free. Its implementation will cause more emphasizes to be placed on quantity rather than quality. The reigns of government are held by the majority party regardless of how inefficient or corrupt they are. Democratic governments face the danger of being lead by incompetent persons. Armatures can collect votes and be elected into certain positions where they lack the intellectual capacity to steer them in the right direction. Democracy can become the government for the rich in the state. The whole democratic process is ruled over by the might of economic power. Where votes are purchased, and media manipulated to create favorable public opinion.
