Brooks’ book ‘World War Z’ is a masterpiece in recollections on what went on in another life. The Zombies which permeate the narrative and the ten year war which went on for a decade are apt comparisons to the Frankenstein story although Brooks is more concerned with inefficiency and government ineptitude faced by the American nation.
Brooks also uses the oral interview extensively to create situations where the reader is made to understand the zombies better since the war is being waged against them. The reactions of several governments to the pandemic created by the zombies as well as the ingrained prejudices of people, particularly Arabs with regards to Israel are crucial parts of the story. Scientific progress is also an issue here as one has to deal with several conflicting aspects which intrinsically demonstrate that man can create every method to survive in terrible constraints.
The theme of survival is perhaps the one which is paramount in this novel and Brooks describes how a nation such as Israel is the only one to take a terrorist threat seriously. Another theme which Brooks perfects is the one dealing with death and the boundaries of it. Death is seen as a way of opening up other vistas and the zombies’ search for human flesh also shows that they are in fact not dead at all but simply undead. Brooks continues to focus on such methods of recollection very much similar to Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein or perhaps Bram Stoker’s Dracula at the same time creating a story in a futuristic setting.
