There are those who believe that the only way to improve is to succeed. There are cultures that discourage any sort of mistake, because they feel that it implies a failure in the end result. However, in my opinion some mistakes are worth making, because we learn from them and improve with each step. Parents let their children make their own mistakes instead of forcing their mistakes on them. There is a reason, after all, that we also say that we should learn from History, so that it doesn’t repeat itself.
One particular experience stands out for me when I think of failures. I still remember the first F that I ever got in school: Fourth grade, math, multiplication. It wasn’t that I didn’t understand the process of multiplication; in fact, I was quite good, when I took the time. That year, some really smart new kids joined our class. I had been accustomed to being one of the smartest kids, until that year. Everything became a competition. Multiplication in particular was a problem. When I looked over the questions of the failed test, I realized that I had just gone too quickly and misread almost every number! My parents had warned me to take my time and to verify my answers, but, yet another mistake, I ignored them. But I learned from those mistakes. I learned that it wasn’t worth a competition to literally fail. I learned to take my time and verify my answers. And, most importantly, certainly for my parents, I learned to listen to their advice. This does not mean that we should not make our own mistakes, but sometimes it will save time, energy and pointless mistakes to just listen to others.
