Is language a prerequisite for freedom? Is it possible to be free without using language to think and control one's own thoughts and actions?

Introduction

Language refers to the most multifaceted communication system that man or any animal uses. Freedom refers to the right to craft for oneself the options of choice. The intent of this paper is to find out whether language is a requirement for freedom especially in controlling a person’s contemplation and deeds.
Language, which is adversely developed by man’s society, is particularly vital for freedom. People and organisations in various societies use language to educate on dominant ideologies, norms and even values. Individuals usually use the language they learn from childhood, to determine their course of thought and actions throughout their lives. This is to say that the language of one’s society avails certain choices of understanding and interpretation to a person. It through language therefore that an individual gets to understand the tenets of freedom. Since freedom involves one’s ability to make choices, language is extremely valuable. It is through language; the system of communication that individuals are able to understand the choices availed to them and be free to choose from these choices.

It is very difficult to be free without the use of language especially in thoughts and the determination of an individual’s behavior or actions. It is through the use of language that people teach others what to think and how they think. For thinking to take place, language must be involved. Taking control of an individual’s action is also a component of thought which involves language. Freedom depends on making choices out of peoples thoughts. Since language controls these thoughts, individuals freedom will always be limited.
