Sustainability of engineering systems forms the fundamental principle that guides actions and decision-making activities in any organization. Meeting current without compromising future needs is the overall goal of sustainability. Sustainability is also critical when making a trade-off among social, economic, and environmental goals. However, sustainability is yet to be realized in industrial ecology due to several challenges that impede its implementation.
