Hurricane Katrina is considered the largest national disaster in the United States. It led to the death of around 1,800 people and other tens of thousands were left homeless. It came four years after 9/11 and the government had been proactive in creating response plans for such disasters. Childhood obesity is a growing health concern with the National Conference of State Legislatures (2014) estimating that 31.7% of children and adolescents are either obese or overweight. Consequently, such a health concern has an impact on nursing. This paper represents few particular set-backs on different levels of government in response to Hurricane Katarina. This is paper is by no means written with intention to fault individuals. Rather, its purpose is to look and examine some of the issues that took place during and after Katrina. We can certainly assume that everyone involved in emergency response sincerely wanted to do their best. And I'm sure that many emergency responders made significant sacrifices to save lives. This paper examines the case of Massachusetts v. Environmental Protection Agency, a 5-4 Supreme Court decision that combined the substantive, environmental law question of whether the Environmental Protection Agency erred in its initial decision not to regulate greenhouse gas emissions for motor vehicles with the procedural issue of whether states, cities, and environmental organizations had legal standing (defined as the right to use the courts as opposed to Congress to force governmental action) for the environmental claims at issue in the case.
