Both scholars and the average dater agree it usually begins with physical attraction and perceived similarity, and progresses in a somewhat predictable manner from there. Typically, this progression has followed theoretical frameworks such as Knapp’s stages of relational development and Taylor’s (1968) social penetration theory.
