One of the most important novels in 20th century American history, Jack Kerouac’s On the Road is an influential novel about the need to discover one’s meaning in life, and often acts as the thesis for the Beat movement of the 50s and 60s. The novel follows Sal Paradise, a stand in for Kerouac, and his free-wheeling friend Dean Moriarty as they wander and hitchhike across the United States, searching desperately for belonging and a newfound sense of purpose in Cold-War America. In past three decades, community-oriented policing (COP) and problem-oriented policing (POP) are being realized as new policing models replacing the more conventional policing models. The traditional policing models over the past 150 years are designed to endow with three key functionalities including control, order and prevention of crimes (Zhao et al., 2003). While POP is a strategy meant to solve persistent community problems, COP places more importance on the third core function, i.e. crime prevention, by creating awareness among individuals about crimes. COP entitles the law ownership to the people living in a community, therefore, it is not a ...
The origins of beat culture date back to the 1940s when artists such as Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and William Burroughs were pioneering ways in which art and life became one. Their goals were to express the experience of living and creativity across the plain of artistic media such as film. Shadows, written and directed by John Cassavetes, was released in 1959 and featured a jazz scored soundtrack. At the time, jazz largely influenced American beat cinema because of its improvisational and spontaneous character. Beat artists identified with the jazz movement of the 1950s because it was a persecuted ...

Like the Romantic Period, one of the reoccurring themes in Pope’s writing is nature. William Wordsworth a Romantic writer naturally writes about nature. Whereas Pope seeks to explain nature and man in his first epistle in his “Essay on Man”, Wordsworth seeks to glorify nature in his poem, “The Daffodils.”
In Pope’s first epistle he begins as if he were in a dialogue with St. John and tries to explain the nature of man in regards to his place in the universe. He uses rhyming verses because he thought that the reader would be more attracted to ...

Ethnic music is something magnificent and different. When listening to it, one can feel support, cheering, sadness and sympathy. Sometimes ethnic music can bring a person to the highest tops, as well as reveal the most hidden secrets of a culture. In my opinion, ethnic music is something that makes the modern world not so cold and indifferent. The point is that modern music is alike: songs have the same rhythm lyrics have the same rhymes. Everything is similar. On the other hand, there is ethnic music. Ethnic music is like a breath fresh air. There are so many ...
THROUGHOUT THE DECADES
Relationship of Music Throughout the Decades
Throughout the decades, music has seen a lot of changes. One thing that stayed the same is Rock. It was popular from the 60s all throughout the 2010s (Cox & Warner, 2004). Many different artists saw their rise and fall throughout the decades; many have also made their comebacks in the 2000s. There are a couple of key artists that have made their name prominent in music history, changing the way people heard music (Cullen, 2001). The important eras ...

In his article, “The Gal Yippers Have No Place In Our Jazz Bands.” (Down Beat 15 October 1939), Ted Toll is at pains to point out that a good jazz vocalist should not be simply based exclusively on the sex. He is scathing of women due to the fact that he believes they are too artificial and this perhaps reflects the attitude which was prevalent in the time regarding women – one has to remember that this was 1939 and women were treated as quite less than important in those days.
However the main thrust of Toll’s article seems ...

Teenagers by Promoting Misogyny
Discrimination against Women
Today’s North American Rap Music expresses many things that happen in our society. More often, rap music includes tough lyrics that portray social realities that promote awareness towards its audiences. However, some of the famous rap compositions not only inspire its listeners, but it also promotes misogyny in terms of expressing hatred towards women due to its explicit lyrics. I have recommended “Eating Alone” because it is tone and motif. The tone of the poem is nostalgic. The author mentions the earth now is “brown and old” while remembering before how he used to walk with his father. He cannot remember if he talked with him or not, but the memories of his, “left hand braced on knee, creaky—to lift and hold to myeye a rotten pear.” The memories are so strong he almost sees his father, only to find it is actually a shovel standing in dirt. The character of Socrates in Aristophanes’s Cloud resembles the character he put across in Plato’s Apology. In both cases, Socrates is a master sophist, the ideal philosopher. He is well versed in sophistry, science, rhetoric, and atheism. He appears removed from reality, is ready to defend his stand however outrageous it sounds and refuses to give in to coercions by his critics, students and authorities. Socrates maintains the character of a model philosopher and intellect who combines simplicity with an air of importance to converse convincingly with his challengers regardless of the nature of the topic at ...
Recent studies conducted by the World Health Organization have revealed that in Europe, the major cause of death among women aged 16 to 44 is violence in the home. Kofi Annan, UN General Secretary (1999) said, “Indeed, violence against women knows no boundary of geography, culture or wealth”. He said that, in fact, it is the most shameful human rights violation and perhaps the most pervasive. Domestic violence goes beyond the beating of a woman. Sexual harassment, marital rape, forced prostitution, intimidation at work, trafficking and forced prostitution are some of the atrocities that constitute domestic violence against women. ...

In the African-American community, the topic of education has long been one of some considerable controversy. To some, access to education has been seen as the way out of some of the most endemic social problems that the community faces. To others, education has been seen as a choice to assimilate with the majority culture (DeCuir-Gunby). In defiance to that, such institutions as the hip-hop culture have arisen, showing other ways (although more harmful) that members of the African-American community can make a name for themselves. This debate is not new; in Alice Walker’s The Color Purple and “ ...

Baldwin’s Go Tell it on the Mountain, and Morrison’s Home are two Interesting to read literatures. Each book brings its own uniqueness to the table. Indeed, in both books, there is a brilliant course in regards to exploring their examinations of race, family, and religion. However, America’s most celebrated novelist, Nobel Prize-winner Toni Morrison lengthens her philosophical point of view on our history with his story of redemption. Misogyny in Rap Lyrics
Introduction
Sexism and misogyny exist throughout our popular culture. Even with that in mind gangsta rap is pointed to more often than other music genres as posing a serious problem in its presentation of women and the heavily misogynistic view that this involves. It is unclear who is potentially at fault here: for some, it is the music industry and its continued endorsement of such music, whilst for others it is the rappers themselves who write and perform the lyrics in question. Otware (2011) states that “Sexism, misogyny and homophobia permeate the music” (Otware, 2011, p31) which demonstrates how ...
