Pharmaceutical wastes include illegal drugs, pharmaceutical products, and pharmaceutical ingredients. Regulations dealing with pharmaceutical wastes resulted from studies indicating that fish and wildlife were suffering from an increase in the content of drugs in the water resources. A study conducted by the Geological Society in the United States, in 2002, indicated an increase in the percentage pharmaceuticals released to water streams (Smith, 2002).
