The concept of critical thinking has been around since time immemorial. Efforts to define the concept date as back as two and a half millennia ago. However, considerable attempts to define the idea of critical thinking can effectively be attributed to the mid 20th century. Just like the broad field of philosophy, critical thinking cannot be assigned a single accurate and precise definition. Even so, from the principles embraced by the idea, a reasonable definition can be drawn. As such, critical thinking can be said to be an independent, sober thinking which endeavors to reason at the greatest level ...

The concept of critical thinking entails a way of finding out whether the information received is true or false. There are six principles that govern the process of critical thinking.
The first principle dictates that for an extraordinary claim to be made it must be supported by extraordinary evidence. The level of extraordinariness of a claim is determined by how much a claim goes against what we already believe. The more a claim is unexpected, the more one needs in terms of supporting evidence so that a claim can be believed. This theory is important in critical thinking because ...
Philosophy and Society
Education and philosophy are two closely related disciplines. In some areas, the two disciplines overlap each other. Education is on the dynamic side in philosophy. They correlate in that an individual can never be taught of one and the other left. Education can never be completed without philosophy. Education makes it possible for philosophy to convert others to its values and aims. Philosophy is fundamental to the career goals (Jaspers 32).
The value of philosophy is never self-evident. Philosophy is usually under suspicion of being deprived of any value and useless practically. Philosophy is never useful in the production ...

Critical Thinking
This is the intellectually disciplined process of observing, analysing and creating ideas. Critical thinking is self-guided, self-disciplined thinking which attempts to reason at the highest level of quality in a fair-minded way. The world has very few critical thinkers who always try to live reasonably, rationally and empathetically. They are often aware of human nature and the kind of thinking that emanates from it. If left unchecked, irrational human counterparts are often on a path to destruction. This is where critical thinkers come in. Critical thinkers swoop in and think diligently, analyse the situations at hand and ...

Hello, Jennifer
It is apparent that emotions such as anxiety and other aspects that provoke an intense feeling have the potential of affecting critical thinking. I agree with your argument that both internal and external factors affect one’s ability to think critically. This means one’s ability to cope or manage situations that incite emotions define his or her degree of making critical decisions (Lipe & Beasley, 2004). In Allan Bloom’s book The Closing of the American Mind, he essentially argues that the modern liberal idea of cultural and societal pluralism is leading to an inability to perform critical thinking. Essentially, instead of saying one of two differing choices is better, one would simply ‘see the merits’ in both – this leads to us not forming opinions of our own, but instead offering a milquetoast acceptance of everything that dilutes our experience. While these concerns are valid, these arguments do not necessarily correlate to an objective assessment of how critical thinking works, and instead reads as a ...

Elder and Paul (2011) posit, “There are predictable stages through which every person who develops as a critical thinker passes” (p. 1). I agree with this assertion. If we assume that the premise learning is a process holds true, then that process offers great insights of Elder and Paul’s argument. The later premise for learning as a process shows that a thinker must move from regions of familiarity to unfamiliar one. Critical thinking requires that the person understand the basic concept of a theory if s/he is to think critically about that theory. The converse ideation, where critical ...
