On February 2, 2016, I attended a show by Real Big Fish at Brooklyn Bowl in New York. The show commenced at 8:00 pm and it only accommodated people aged 21 years and above (Brooklyn Bowl par. 1). Specifically, Real Big Fish is a U.S. SKA punk music band formed in the mid-1990s. Shortly after its inception, the group gained immense prominence across the nation. The band’s long-term success, as well as its ability to put up an electrifying performance, informed my decision to attend the show. I stayed at the show until the performances was over. The ...

Hart Crane's "To Brooklyn Bridge" is a rare poem that effectively uses diction to convey the immensity of something as large as a bridge. "To Brooklyn Bridge" is much more than a dedication to the famous bridge. The poem's word choice represents the grandiosity of the bridge itself. Its diction and tone combine to achieve a quintessential work that accurately depicts the size and importance of the Brooklyn bridge to New Yorkers and non-New Yorkers alike.
In the first stanza, Crane asks a question in a rather inquisitive tone. "How many dawns, chill from his rippling rest/The seagull’ ...

Emily Bronte’s novel “Wuthering Heights”, which was firstly published in London in 1847, has raised many discussions and disagreements. One of the most disputable issues regarding this novel is the question whether “Wuthering Heights” belongs to Romanticism or Realism. For better understanding of the problem it is important to define these notions. Thus, in brief, Romanticism in literature “is more concerned with emotion than rationality. It values the individual over society, nature over city. It questions or attacks rules, conventions and social protocol” (luc.edu). Meanwhile, the concept of Realism refers to representing “events and social conditions as they ...
On January 21, 2010 the U.S. Supreme Court decided that corporations had equal rights as individual citizens with regard to campaign contributions during political elections. This therefore implies that corporations also enjoy the protection of the First Amendment in the Bill of Rights (Freedom of Speech). The court case was Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission (Levin-Waldman, 2011, 178). The above reaction to the court decision is from the liberal side and I agree. I think that the decision was not good and not respectful of the rights of citizens. Democracy is no longer powerful when campaign elections can ...
Al Capone was a gangster who ran an organized crime syndicate back in the 1920s in the Chicago area during the Prohibition era. Despite his role in various crimes, Capone was a charming gangster who was both charitable and amiable to others. His demeanor was opposite the power and viciousness of his personality, which is why he became an iconic image of the successful American gangster. He was even dubbed as the modern-day Robinhood for his knack in helping the poor people. Born in 1899, Capone was the fourth of nine children born to Gabriele and Teresina, both Italian immigrants. ...
Self-actualization is the process of realizing one's full potential - to really work hard and find out what you are capable of. Understanding the mind has been a particular passion of mine for a very long time - ever since my teenage years, I have struggled with my endless curiosity about why people do the things they do. Furthermore, I have always wanted to learn more about what people can do to better themselves. Realizing that I want to help people with their own emotional and life-related problems was a huge moment for me, and one that has brought me to ...

Exercise 1: Your March 3 (00) editorial describing the deeded lineage of Willamette Meteorite overlooks a salient aspect of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Community’s claim to the artefact. The pervasive ramblings of the United States Cavalry across Indian land had a very coercive effect on Indian willingness to sign treaties in 1855, when the land on which the meteorite rested was obtained by the treaty. The Willamette Meteorite doesn’t belong in the Museum of Natural History any more than the Brooklyn Dodgers belong in the Los Angeles.
Answer: The above paragraph can be reformulated as premises and conclusion as follows:
Premise 2: The land on which the Meteorite rested ...

Second, the business ...

Welcome Home in Mengestu’s “Home at Last” Human being has to accept events taking place in social medium and predict their development most accurately to make this world understandable and interesting. Inner harmony is impossible without existential understanding of rules powering our lives; purification of our souls is not possible without hardships and misery. Life can be really tough at times and whenever you are morally crushed and spiritually disencouraged it is always important to find the place where you can be your own self. This place can be a piece of land, apartment, country, continent, which can ...
The story of women in science and technology throughout the ages is a deeply inspirational account of how a class of females, most of whose names have been lost through the great annals of time, helped change the world for the better. How can a lot of people have missed this truth? It seems, as one will reflect upon the current stature of women folk in society these days, that there has been a deliberate gap in introducing the concept to the populace. Most people have never heard about them. How come? In this present time and age where -- throughout the ...

Reading mama Lola has made me understand that religion is all about observing certain religious believes rather than just being part of a religious sect. Every religion is directed towards a supreme being, yet the religious proceedings are dependent on where an individual was brought up. Many times, people condemn others for observing certain religious rituals, terming them evil, yet they do not understand the reason behind it. One unique feature about religion is that anyone who dedicates his or her life to it feels it is the right form of religious worship. Religion plays an important part in an individual’ ...

Urban Farming is a new methodology of introducing farming to cities and to the urban landscape, particularly on top of buildings where it can be positioned conveniently for enough sun exposure and soil placement. Such examples include Brooklyn Grange Urban Farm and the roof garden in the Waldorf Astoria. Both exemplify that farming activities can be done in urban places. I have observed several differences between the two urban farms. It can also be contested that Waldorf Astoria is more like a garden than a farm due to its smaller scale compared to the urban farm in Brooklyn. And also, the ...

In the following essay, I would like to compare the coverage of Harlem race riot of March 1935 presented by two newspapers – New York Age –one of the most influential African-American newspapers published from 1887 to 1955 and Brooklyn Eagle, a daily newspaper published from 1841 to 1955. At the time of the riots, there were a lot of speculations about the exact circumstances which incited the riot. The whole incident started off with the ungrounded rumor that the 16 year old Black, Puerto Rican boy had been beaten to death due to his alleged attempt to steal candy from a ...

As a father of free verse, Walt Whitman breaks the limits of the general poetic form, and in general, his poems are prose-like. Even though he did not invent the free verse form, he uses it effectively in his poem that gains fame among the readers. He uses profound imagery in his poems, including debris, rotten leaves, and everything in nature, especially what he considers as nature, which includes sexuality, including prostitution, and death. He reflects and mirrors the nature and the world around him because he strongly believes there is a symbiotic relationship between poet and world. He rightly says ...

Practically, the capitalist class of people does not hesitate to involve or use force at the time that suits its own interests. In this paper, the analysis covers Marx explanations of primitive accumulation process as compared to the modern class of people. It could be clearly understood that capitalism introduced an obscene and outright slavery which was a direct, as well as counterpart emergence of wage laborers. Through the process, capitalism produced the world market through the exploitation of three colonial continents. I must admit that I had my own preconceived ideas and notions about the mentally retarded persons all along and before I had an opportunity of volunteering in a facility that provides care for the mentally ill. Even at the moment when we were given an opportunity to volunteer in a mental health facility, I had my own ideas of what I would see, experience, and what the patients or the mentally retarded would be like. These notions had been built into me and developed throughout my life through listening to popular opinions from people and readings from the media. I ...
The programs that would be analyzed for the current discourse are the Early Head Start Program of the Children's Aid Society and the Promise Neighborhoods Program. At the onset, the two programs share similarities in terms of focusing on the educational needs of children in poor or disadvantaged neighborhoods. Likewise, the strengths of both programs identified their apparent capacities to address, not only the academic needs of children, but also eventually earmarking an improvement in the welfare of these marginalized families through improving the socio-emotional and educational needs of their children. On the other hand, these two programs ...
Arthur Miller’s iconic play Death of a Salesman is rife with symbolism, rich characters that welcome in-depth study and debate, relationships between different characters that warrant close examination and themes and motives that range from statements about the American Dream and socioeconomics to the importance of place, feminism, gender roles and familial relationships. One of the most prominent themes in Death of a Salesman is that of betrayal. Arthur Miller thoroughly and effectively examines betrayal and the different forms it can take. Betrayal and abandonment, a form of a betrayal, characterize nearly all of the significant relationships in the play, particularly the ...

It is not secret that there is still racial inequality within society. The mass migrations to cities have left many neighborhoods overpopulated, destitute, and families mainly minorities, left holding the bag. The progress of urbanization has led to many positive and negative aspects that affect every member. As life expectancy increases, people will naturally migrate from rural areas to urban areas where there is more opportunity for sustainable living. In essence the concept of participatory design has emerged from urbanization, a tool implemented in order to include community involvement in urban planning and development. In the matter of Atlantic Yards ...
When Lilacs Last In The Dooryard Bloom’d
The Poem entitled “When Lilacs Last In The Dooryard Bloom’d” is Walt Whitman’s romanticized story of an American leader during a trying time. In his poem, he shows the audience his own meaning of democracy as well as racial equality. His poem speaks of Abraham Lincoln as the one who brought about racial equality in a land that was being tried. This was during the time of national disagreement, when their great leader fought for equality and abolitionism. This was the most prominent theme seen in Whitman’s work here. He speaks to the deceased president about his ...

Abstract The Brooklyn Bridge is probably underappreciated by most of the people who use it today but it is still an example of great engineering. The chief engineer, Roebling, designed a suspension bridge that was fifty percent longer than any other suspension bridge of the times. His design for weighting of the bridge to keep it stable when there was wind is a very important lesson for today’s suspension bridge designers. The health and safety issues of the height of the bridge and the use of the Caisson boxes have been discussed. The approximately 27 deaths that took place ...
History has seen very few authors affect the national fabric to such a great extent as Norman Mailer. At the time of the restless Sixties, Mailer was successful in developing a style of journalism which combined true events like political commentary and autobiography with a wide range of eloquent words which was a common feature of the literary novel. His works were deemed controversial due to their nonconformity to the traditional style as well as his debatable opinion on life in America. The impact that the Second World War had had on him was clearly indicated through the nature of his works. Mailer ...
