High frequency trading has progressed a lot in the last decade or so. From being passive algorithmic trades to now active and aggressive computerised trading, the practice has added a lot of benefits and problems to the securities market. Volatility is generally considered a negative aspect in securities trading as it creates uncertainty and erodes the confidence of market participants. But it is also true that some volatility is necessary as price change is what makes trading survive. However, in the current environment, high frequency trades which involve working out complex algorithms and execution of orders in milliseconds can ...

Sjogren Syndrome(SS) is an autoimmune disease that causes lymphocytic infiltration of exocrine glands, primarily lachrymal and salivary glands. Simply put, it is a chronic immune disorder in which white blood cells of the patient attack saliva and tear glands. At times, glands that keep the vagina moist are also attacked resulting in vaginal dryness. In normal cases, humans' immune system generates antibodies to attack harmful material as virus and bacteria. Putting the cart before the horse, the immune system in SS patients starts producing autoantibodies and autoreactive cells that start attacking those very body parts that they are ...
Type 1 diabetes (T1DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder wherein an immune response targets the insulin-producing beta-cells of the pancreas leading to cellular damage sufficient enough to significantly reduce, and later on eliminate, the synthesis of insulin (Van Belle et al., 2011). It typically manifests in people below 30 years of age. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) (2016) estimates that 29.1 million or 9.3% of Americans are diabetics but of this number, only 1.25 million or around 5% have type 1 diabetes. The purpose of this paper is to describe the pathophysiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, treatment and management, and ...

The overall ethical dilemma is that a police rookie, Peter Liang accidentally killed an unarmed man, Akai Gurley in a dark stairway during a routine patrol. While it is true that Liang killed an innocent man, he had a right to take precaution of his life by drawn gut his gun while patrolling the Pink Houses with his partner landau. Specifically, Liang was first accused of breaking a major rule in which he had been trained to “never put his finger on the trigger unless he was ready to shoot”. However, he broke that rule and his negligence led ...
ATTENTION GETTER: Author Thomas Dekker once said that “sleep is that golden chain that ties health and our bodies together” (“Thomas Dekker”). True enough, good sleep is an important factor in the achievement of good health; thus, everybody longs for it. For those who struggle to get a good sleep, sleeping drugs or sleeping pills become their only source of hope. Sleeping drugs help to take away ordinariness of daily routine and allow obtaining sound sleep. An ideal sleeping pill should induce good quality and indistinguishable sleep experience. Unfortunately, modern drugs do not produce this result, and in fact, ...

Since the end of the Second World War in 1945, nuclear technology became rampant throughout the globe as they realized the potential of such technology for both energy production and warfare. Several nations had developed their nuclear programs to cement their capabilities to the world and discover new methods on how nuclear power can be reduced. While the proliferation of nuclear arms and power had decreased significantly, there were nations that broke away from such norm and continued with their nuclear programs despite the criticism from the international community. There is truly nothing better than curling up in a cozy chair with a snack and a fantastic book. It is easy to get so caught up in parenting, marriage and work that personal time for book exploration is set aside never to be enjoyed. One of the best things for the human soul is to be fed by a nourishing and educationally delicious book. People don’t realize it but they have a set of criteria against which an author’s work can be measured. Ultimately, that criteria determines if it is worthy of time in that cozy chair. Kevin Trudeau’s book ...
Childhood bipolar is a disorder that mainly occurs in children. These children are characterized by periodical and abrupt mood swings, periodical hyperactivity which can also be followed by very intense temper tantrums which in most cases lead to deviant behaviors. All these behaviors can be seen in these children within a very short period of time many a times leading to misunderstanding of these children (Fristad & Arnold 23). Peace may become a vocabulary to his children because they never seem to look settled and if they do, these periods last for just a short time. This is a problem that needs to be taken not ...
Selective perception is a process of filtering things what have been seen and heard to fit personal needs of a person. For example, if a person has planned to buy an Audi A3, he/she will get the feel of seeing the Audi A3 often. The person may come across many Audi cars earlier, but never noticed it intentionally. Once he/she decided to buy it, then his/her eyes will automatically look only for the Audi A3 because it has been filtered out by the selective perception. While disregarding opposing standpoints, this selective perception will help the person to perceive what he/she wants to ...
Avena, N., Rada, P. and Hoebel, B. G. (2008). Evidence for Sugar Addiction: Behavioral and Neurochemical Effects of Intermittent, Excessive Sugar Intake. Neuroscience Biobehavioral Review, 32(1): 20-39.
The nervous system evolves to motivate and reinforces an individual to subconsciously eat sweet foods and other foods that may trigger such addictive behavior similar to that of alcohol addiction. In this research, Avena and colleagues attempt to find whether or not sugar should be included in the ranks of heroin and cocaine that could also lead to a natural form of addiction. Avena and colleagues contend that food addiction may be a plausible explanation to explain how the brain pathways evolved in response to natural reinforcements that are activated in the same vein that pathways for narcotics are also activated. ...

The AS-AD framework is a very useful economy tool, which reduces the economy into a simple model of supply and demand. The aggregate demand curve (AD) is given by the summation of consumption (C), investments (I), government purchases (G) and net exports (X-M). On the other hand, the supply curve is a function of the expected price levels. This paper uses the AS-AD model to analyse the economy at various levels of employment, and the adjustments that accompany movement various policy actions. Copyrights define the rights that individuals have over their artistic and literary works. The works covered by copyrights include paintings, music, books, computer programs, advertisements, and technical drawings. Patents are exclusive rights granted to an individual for an invention. Human behavior is determined by the interplay of several factors; individual genes and the environment are some of the leading factors in determining personal traits and tendencies. However, although inheritance and the environment play the greater role in determining an individual’s behavior, hormones as well as neurotransmitters also play crucial roles in shaping one’s behavior. Some hormones, for example, are linked with controlling anger and aggression in both men and women, while other sets of hormones are linked with the control of sleep. Hormonal imbalances are also linked with the control of individual temperaments. Hormones exert their ...

1. What is the underlying mechanism of M.A.'s asthma? What are the three airway responses that occur during an asthma episode?
An autoimmune response to allergens from cats and plants is the underlying mechanism for the patient’s condition. These allergens, though nonpathogenic, trigger an inflammatory cascade wherein lymphocytes, eosinophils, mast cells, neutrophils, macrophages and dendritic cells exert their effects on the respiratory tract (Linzer 87). As an example, B lymphocytes synthesize immunoglobulin E which helps signal the release of histamine, leukotrienes, prostaglandin and cytokines which are proteins that promote vasodilation and hyperactivity in mucus-producing goblet cells (Murdoch & Lloyd 27). Prostaglandin causes the smooth muscles in the airway to constrict. Along with vasodilation and increased mucus production, bronchial constriction ...

Causes of conflict
Conflict management system can manage conflict and channel it into constructive areas. Many natural resources have strong emotive ties for people relating to their identity, homeland and property, but they are also extremely valuable, tradable and easily lost. Much of the worlds mineral wealth is exploited in places where poverty is widespread and where conflict has been a feature of society. Experience suggests that mining impacts can become politicized and can lead to conflicts. The Kennedy School of government at Harvard University (2008) describe conflict as both inevitable and avoidable, and considers that a level of suspicion and questioning generally ...
1. When placed on an agar slab and incubated at 30°C for 2 days, a single yeast cell proliferates into a colony with a diameter of 2 mm containing 108 yeast cells. If the cell has a functional Ade2 gene (Ade2+), the colony will be white; if Ade2 is non-functional (Ade2–), the colony will be red. You take a strain with a mutant Ade2– at the regular chromosomal position (red colonies) and insert a second, functional Ade2+ gene near the telomere. You find that the colonies are a mixture of red and white patches or sectors. Figure 1 shows some colonies; the black regions represent the ...

Historically, civil engineering is one of the oldest practices in engineering, and still remains the broadest professional field combined with scientific principles. Many early structures, facilities, and transportation aspects were the result of the greatest engineering minds, then branching out into materials science, soil mechanics, waterworks, environment, mechanics and other subgenre fields. However, a particular discipline thriving in one geographical area may not necessarily thrive in another. This explains why sustainable design in the United Kingdom prefers to keep its design sustainability a step ahead for all aspects of civil engineering design (Sherwin, 2012). Since civil engineering umbrellas a multitude ...
According to the Mayo Clinic (2012), depression is also known as “major depression, major depressive disorder, and clinical depression, and it will affect almost 15 percent of the population at some time in their lives (Turnquist, in Payne, 2011).” It is more than just a sense of being “down;” it is a real, persistent disorder that affects your mood in such a way (i.e. sadness or loss of interest in former activities) that it interferes with your daily life. It is a chronic condition, and it can last for weeks, months, or even years. People who suffer from it ...
Conflict is a common thing in this universe. This particular thing is very evident from the largest structure of creation to the tiniest one. Nevertheless, there are still ways to resolve it. And that is what this paper is all about – particularly in relation to covert conflicts. Covert conflict behavior, in the first place, reflects indirect ways of manifesting conflicts between individuals (Gullotta & Adams, 2008). It is simply doing other things instead of directly solving the real concerns. Thus, in reality, covert conflict behavior just doesn’t help at all.
One example of such condition is when I ...
Significant characteristics of a disease
Virulence is a term that describes “the capacity of a microbe to cause disease after infection”. It is a multifaceted phenomenon is dependent on the “context and nature of the interaction between the host and the microbe.” The number of fatalities that occur as a result of infection by a given pathogen is used as a measure of the virulence. Based on this parameter, the Ebola virus would therefore be considered to be highly virulent as compared to small pox. Give that research has provided better understanding of pathogens thus led to the development of potent forms of therapy; some of the pathogens ...
Most of us have definitely heard something about paranoia at some points of our lives. But do we actually know at least something about this disease in deed and not in name? In the modern world, accidents can be caused by a magnitude of factors such as human behavior, systems and organization failure. There has been debate why there is advancement in technology, but accidents have continued to rise. In fact, some have argued that technology has contributed more to these accidents since the rate at which they are occurring is more than the way they were before. Experts have tried to connect the number of accidents that occur ...

Like the old saying goes, “Cleanliness is next to godliness,” but at what point does cleaning and being tidy cross the line into mental illness? Likewise, while a large percentage of the population may admit to being a little superstitious and many hotels don’t include a 13th floor, at what point does certain superstitious beliefs and behaviors turn into compulsions or behaviors that must be carried out or else the individual is unable to proceed throughout his or her day? To an outsider, it may appear like a nonsense disease with behaviors that should be easy to curtail by just stopping the ...
Re-uptake involves the reabsorption of neurotransmitters by any of the neurotransmitter receptors or transporters. The transporters involved are usually of pre-synaptic neurons. Re-uptake occurs after the neurotransmitter has transmitted a neural impulse. Re-uptake is very crucial in order for the normal functioning of synapses to take place. This is because it allows the neurotransmitters to be recycled, thereby regulating their levels in the synapse. This in turn dictates the length of time it takes for a signal - generated by neurotransmitter release - to last. Neurotransmitters are usually large hydrophilic molecules that cannot pass through the neuronal membranes. For this reason, ...
Since the ancient times, it is visible that there is always a gap between societies that often divides them into two or more distinct groups. There are countries that have more political and economic capability than other countries, while there are countries that are better in social stability. In terms of people, they are mostly divided through their financial capability, educational attainment and upbringing, which would then determine as to whether or not they can keep up with the modern world. As far as technology is concerned, people are yet again divided over their capacity to know and afford these ...

The study conducted a survey on a random sample of 100 participants. The results indicated that most people do not support using genetic testing as defense in criminal procedures. Similarly, many people do not see the causation relationship between the two phenomena. Nevertheless, this research concluded that, following the implications of criminal behavior, and that, most criminal activities such ...

On 11 April 2012 two huge earthquakes occurred beneath the floor of the Indian Ocean, off the coast of North Sumatra. Registering a magnitude of 8.6, the first was followed by another of 8.2 magnitude, which scientists subsequently identified as an aftershock. Neither triggered a large scale tsunami, which scientists attribute to the movement being of the “strike-slip” type, rather than the “thrust” type. However, strike-slip earthquakes are normally of a ...
