Hurricane Katrina was the worst disaster to hit the United States since the 9/11 attacks. In the aftermath of the 11 September 2001 attacks, the US Department of Homeland Security came up with a host of plans and restructured FEMA at the cost of billions of dollars. Despite all the spending and planning, the chinks in the armor were apparent before and after Hurricane Katrina. The forecast of the Hurricane along with its destructive capability and target path gave several cities ample time to evacuate hundreds of citizens before the storm struck. There were two days warning from 24 ...

[Author Name] You do not have to wear the uniform to appreciate the inherent difficulty of police work. Each work day is different, and there is no clear and consistent guidebook on how police should make unsupervised, split-second judgements, handle threats to public safety, properly maintain order, or determine the efficient allocation of limited investigative resources. In truth, the unique requirements of their jobs demand that officers have broad authority to exercise their best judgement: the core of police discretion. Kelling (1999) describes two discrete aspects of police work that require that officers be insulated from knee-jerk, public scrutiny: ...

Abstract The successful flight of an aircraft is often attributed to the finesse of its pilots as well as the dispatcher. It is a common practice in air crash investigations to put the blame of such a mishap on the shoulders of its pilots and the air traffic control unit. Most often, the other factors that are inclusive in any successful flight, is omitted. This paper tries to analyze these causes from the perspective of National Transport Safety Board, to generate an independent view about the crash of UPS Flight 1354. After thorough inspection of NTSB reports three main ...
Interpersonal physical violence (committed against women and children)
Human trafficking and concomitant criminal sexual exploitation of women and children in the XXI century is becoming the fastest growing and highly lucrative activity for transnational organized crime. Statistical data of different sources irrefutably specify on the tendency of increasing human trafficking in many countries of the world. It is necessary, to mark that this crime is not a problem of one state and an issue that has gained an international dimension. The danger of human trafficking is that the buyer gets as a result of the deed of sale full control over the victim and may dispose of ...
One of the hallmarks of the US criminal law is the extent of protections afforded to criminal defendants. While a large body of criminal procedure has been developed and refined through case law, the US Constitution lays the foundation for procedural protections that are guaranteed to a criminal defendant. Law enforcement at all levels are required to adhere to such protections and guarantees. The reason that such projections and safeguards are so important for a criminal defendant is to prevent the government from abusing its power. In most cases, a criminal defendant will have considerably fewer resources and means ...

ISBN: 0670033375, 9780670033379 There are many societal arguments that preoccupy modern American and worldwide issues affecting the globe today that have yet to be resolved. One of these arguments regards human society and its, largely negative, impacts on the planet. Global warming, air pollution, unclean water, as well as, environmental anomalies like drought, floods and diminishment of needed resources, like oil, are constantly being debated. As it stands, the many governments, like the United States, refuses to agree upon whether global warming even exists. If the problems are not being taken seriously or simply disregarded, then no solutions and ...

Natural disasters are inevitable catastrophes that disrupt the normal livelihoods of people causing property destruction, devastation, injuries, illnesses and loss of lives. Most natural disasters such as earthquakes occur suddenly and are the ones that cause the most damage. Although disasters like hurricanes have advanced warnings, they still end up causing hazardous effects though of lesser magnitude than the ones without warning since people will tend to get injured while scramming to prepare for the disaster or during the evacuation process. The number of people affected by disasters has tripled in the last decade to two billion people, yet ...
The Book of Revelation has yielded different interpretive possibilities for just about as long as there have been theologians around to read and explain it. This is a book that is filled with mysteries, whether it is the identity of the four apocalyptic horsemen who are supposed to usher in the judgment of God, the timing of the rising of people from the dead for that judgment, and whether Jesus Christ returns before the tribulation of the believers or after -- or whether the 1,000-year reign that the book discusses is literal or figurative in nature. After all, ...

Life is an extraordinary gift and entails two dynamic cycles. One in which where we experience youth and then a wonderful path which is aging and it is said that with age comes wisdom. John may have a tort action against Manny for Assault. The elements of assault include: intent, apprehension of an offensive or harmful contact and causation. The cleat thrown by Manny toward John created apprehension of harmful contact on the part of John, knowing that if a cleat struck him, especially in the face, injury would result. For purposes of securing its homeland, setting up intelligence, as well as, warning systems which can detect terrorist activities before their manifestation has been instrumental towards curtailing the attacks in the United States. In essence, the discussion below will center on NCTC and ways of mitigating the ...
Literature Review on the topic of Disaster and Emergency Management Systems
Disasters are the regular companions of the mankind. They bring losses and devastation, ruin crops and take people’s lives. The list of cities that have been destroyed is endless and reminds people of the fact that nature is forever with us. Nevertheless, man’s activity and ambitions seem to have no boundaries. Such catastrophes as Chernobyl, the explosions on the Piper Alpha, and other numerous fires are the results of human negligence. The one thing is certain: disasters are likely to happen but where and when is the question. Thus, disaster and emergency management in the form of ...
In the past thirty years, humanity has moved into a digital era where billions of people are connected via an ever advancing technology boom. Yousef starts his days by waking up to the sound of the alarm, and listening to the radio while driving his car to work. Then he works on the computer to do some tasks; after that he contacts some people by calling and texting them via Smartphone. In his leisure time, he just passes his fingertip over a screen and sinks into some application to update himself with the latest news headline continuing to use ...

In the essay, “Censorship and the Imposition of Form”, Pierre Bourdieu begins with a definition for the word ‘skewed’. He states that when used in a grammatical context, it points to phrases which first seem to introduce a particular meaning, but go on to denote an entirely different one (Bourdieu, 1991). This idea is introduced by Bourdieu so that he develops a debate regarding the potential of language to establish authority, secure a powerful position, structure prospects for emblematic profit and establish limitations within a given field. Bourdieu writes that censorship is never quite as perfect or invisible as ...
The public does not view all industries as equal in the free trade market. I believe it is ethical to consider industries as unequal parties in trade. I base my argument on the fact that some industries produce products that are harmful to the consumers. The harm is caused if there is excessive usage of these products. The tobacco industry is an example of an industry that produces products that are harmful to human beings. Companies in the tobacco industry focus on the production and sale of tobacco cigarettes. There are many people who smoke tobacco cigarettes all over ...

Automobile technology has managed to come a long way. A few decades ago, automobile makers were boasting about airbags being the latest state-of-the-art technology in car safety. Warning systems and collision avoidance have been the latest developments for car technology. Though it is not a new technology, reverse cameras are available with the cross-traffic warning systems for preventing drivers from reversing from their parking spot into the oncoming traffic. Again, the vehicle sensor technology has been used for detection and prevention from all-too-common dangerous situations. These technologies are perfect for ensuring individuals and families are kept safe. Also, technology has helped ...
Better communication means using the same definitions. The words that are used by the petroleum industry to describe the amount of production, waste and loss are not clearly defined. Transparency is absolutely needed and communication with the IOCs must be improved. The petroleum industrial sector must be held responsible for what they say and what they do. Unravelling the doublespeak in written and spoken messages from the IOCs needs to be a serious goal. The people of the Niger Delta can be involved in translating the dialogue and regulatory intentions of the IOCs. They live in the reality and involving ...

Dreams can be defined as a trail of emotions, thoughts, and images that go through the mind of an individual when they are sleeping. Alternatively, dreams can be defined as visions that are created in the mind of an individual and which are not real. It has often been said that dreams do not serve any purpose, but this is not always the case. Several researchers have argued that this is not true. As such, this paper seeks to explain the reasons why people dream and just how this process takes place.
Discussion
Usually, dreams come in different forms with some ...

The guidelines surrounding the whole concept of interrogation were enunciated by the United States Supreme Court in the celebrated landmark decision case of Miranda v Arizona. Popularly referred to as the Miranda warnings, the police, who are arresting persons are required to abide by the guidelines enshrined there in when conducting interrogation. These guidelines are only applicable to the police in two circumstances. These circumstances include when a suspect is either under police custody or is in custodial interrogation. It is the latter circumstance that is of interest to us in this instance. Before proceeding to examine the ...
Reduction in the level of performance within the workplaces have been witnessed in the contemporary world with stiff competition and economic crisis, causing budget cuts and layoffs options to address the situation. The effect of budget cuts and layoffs is increased uncertainty, fear, as well as higher degrees of stress. Certain workplace stress may be treated normal; excessive stress may lower level of performance and affect emotional and physical health of workers (Rossi, Quick, & Perrewe, 2009).
Many steps exist that an employee may pursue to reduce overall stress levels. These may include taking responsibility for enhancing emotional and ...

There are signs that are exhibited by persons indulging in drug abuse which would appear to be cross cutting amongst various drugs. However, there are certain specific warning signs that are portrayed by different drugs to the users. This is because these drugs have different components which produce different sensations to the individuals. Thus, individuals would display different warning signs of drug abuse depending on the type of drug that they are consuming. Some of these specific signs of drug abuse have been identified for different drugs that are taken by individuals. To begin with, some of the warning ...
I am quite familiar with the verse of 1Timothy 6:10 warning against the dangers of idolizing money. This verse has been used in the past by some Christian sects to convince adherents to take a vow of poverty. The passage has been misinterpreted by both proponents of extreme views that being wealthy is a sin and poverty is a curse. I often encounter this verse during debates about the “prosperity gospel” that is popular among some prominent celebrity pastors. There irony is that the apologists of the prosperity gospel get the initial interpretation right that being rich is not a sin, but ...

There is usually a thin line when determining between legal and ethical issues. In marketing, the strategies used are mostly informed by legal and ethical considerations. The same is true when considering product safety and intellectual property. This means that there is a close relationship between law and ethics; however, it is the existence of the law that makes ethical values enforceable. In general, therefore, ethics are those values or rules of conduct that are created so as to guide a particular group of people while legality is something that pertains to the law. Ethics, in other words, should be contemplated within ...

The Miranda warning is a rule which provides that the police must give criminal suspects in the custody of the law enforcement officers, in the United States, a warning before they can ask questions about what took place during the crime. The rule is exclusionary in that any evidence that is obtained with the violation of the Miranda rules can be successfully suppressed in a court of law. The rule was mandated by the decision of the Supreme Court of the United States in 1966 in the case of Miranda v Arizona. This decision was made in order to protect the Fifth ...

Present day climatic change is the direct result of human influences, which have so far crossed the bounds of variations of natural. The true source of global climatic change is man-induced alteration in atmosphere’s composition. These issues result mainly from emissions associated with uses of energy resources, more or less due to local and regional scales. Urbanization and changes in land use are also an important aspect. Though progress has been made in techniques of monitoring and understanding climatic change, there are still quite a many scientific, technical and institutional obstacles for precise planning to adapt to and mitigate ...
The image chosen for analysis is the seal of the president of the United States of America. The presidential seal is therefore a very important image to all American citizens. The following essay describes and discusses the seal of the president of the United States of America in detail. The Virtual Labs using the Windows Server 2008 R2 is a good experience. I felt in control while using the Virtual Labs, in other words it is designed in a very contemporary way and coupled with the R2 there was no uncomfortable wait counting down in seconds after clicking on a choice. Some of the reviews have called this feeling when using the application as having a ‘tighter feel.’ I did some exploring of what was online in other parts of the Virtual Lab.
I did not stop to shrink the view so that I could see the entirety of the bottom ...

Medication errors are estimated to cause approximately 7000 deaths annually and cost approximately $2 billion in added health care spending. Improving the safety outcomes of medication-use processes in hospitals has been cited as a means of addressing this issue. Careful and planned use of information technology is a proven approach to solve a majority of medication errors made with paper-based systems (Paoletti et al., 2007). These systems have been found to provide much better compliance with the “five rights” of medication administration: right patient, right dose, right route, right time, and right medication (Hook, 2008). Accordingly, the present paper describes a test ...

This paper examines and discusses issues surrounding the current situation regarding capital punishment in Japan, where execution by hanging is still practiced, despite a number of expressed concerns. Japan is in a minority of the world’s countries still exercising the option of capital punishment. According to Rogers (Apr 2013), “there are nearly five times as many countries not executing prisoners as those that do in 2012.” The issue is not simply whether Japan should continue to use the death penalty, but also includes the way it treats prisoners on “Death Row” – those awaiting execution.

It has come to my attention that the bunch of toys produced this month does not meet the required standards. After the quality assurance team ran the usual quality tests on the new bunch of goods, we realized that the goods do not meet the required standards. Among the sub-standard goods is a large shipment of toys meant for the elementary school children that was to be transported to South America at the end of the week before the opening of the schools. The amount of lead in the whistles is slightly above the required amount for children below seven ...

The cultural dissonance can have tragic results for individuals who are trapped between the boundaries of two opposing cultures. The culture difference hence is depicted between Lia Lee’s parents and her doctors. She eventually ends up in a vegetative state for many years not because no one really cares about her epilepsy, but because of cultural and linguistic barriers between her parents who are Hmong and the well meaning American doctors. Linguistically, her Hmong parents do not understand English spoken by the doctors at Ann Fadiman‘s book can be taken to generally act as a warning conflict in our ...

I chose to write about the character of Solomon because he is God’s favorite son of David. It is interesting that Solomon is God’s favorite as Solomon was born of an affair between Bathsheba and David. Bathsheba was the wife of someone else when she conceived Solomon with David. This is important to me because it shows that no matter where you come from, you can go anywhere and do anything.
Solomon is important to Judaism because he was allowed to build the temple where God himself dwelled. This is the first temple in history to be ...

Accidents are an inevitable element of the air carriage industry; however, a good number of these could have been avoided given proper human resource management efforts. The task of these specialists is to recruit, to train, and to evaluate industry employees like pilots. Instead, they often overlook health issues and psychological disorders leaving the wellbeing and lives of passengers exposed to mortal threat. Owing to HR specialists’ miscalculations, pilots with insufficient qualification, those willing to ignore the guidelines of dispatchers and act carelessly received their coveted positions. The liberalization of workplace regulations did the industry an ill favor allowing individuals ...
Starting from autumn of 2013, Ukraine has been a center of an escalating war conflict: starting with peaceful demonstrations in support of Ukraine joining the European Union, to more than one hundred protesters being monstrously killed by the law-enforcers, to Russia invading Crimea and then developing the still-continuing conflict in the east of Ukraine. But what are the reasons of this bloodcurdling incubus born by a supposedly friendly neighbor of once peaceful and promising Ukraine? There are a lot of them, but both in the reasons and the causes Russian government is to blame: it’s them who occupied the territory of ...
