Gangs have continued to grow and spread in many American cities and counties. This occurrence has been paralleled by the growth of gangs in American prisons. Researchers reported that the boundaries between prison gangs and the community have become harder to identify because the gangs have become more sophisticated, and are a threat not only to the institutional security, but to the public safety, as well. According to a survey conducted by the National Gang Crime Research Center, in 1999, members of gangs in prisons and jails increased from 9.4%, in 1991, to 24.7%, in 1999. Other studies reported ...

A. Six Samples of Figurative Language
Figurative language is the use of figures of speech to say something in a way that is not obvious. Samples of figurative language include the use of metaphors, similes, metonymy, paradox, irony, symbols, humor, exaggeration among other tropes in fresh new ways that appeal to the readers’ imagination. The use of figurative language in any piece of writing is very important for it serves a number of purposes. However, style is constantly affected by, among other things, language itself, culture and the tradition of a people’s rhetoric. For its effectiveness therefore, style should vary across cultures depending on ...
The U.S.’s adaptation of The Office is a popular series that features many bosses trying to lead a group of workers. Throughout the series, each boss employs a series of supervisory techniques in order to accomplish this. Some of the techniques are successful, while others fail miserably. While some leaders on the show are more traditional and others try to step out of the mold, they all experiment until they find their comfort zone. Toward the end of the series, Andy Bernard becomes the boss, using a series of disconnected supervisory techniques in hopes of gaining the respect ...

John Adam’s opera Dr. Atomic is about the history of Robert Oppenheimer and others who participated in the famous 1940’s Manhattan project, to create the atomic bomb. Dr. Atomic is set in Los Amos in New Mexico hours before the test-firing of the first atomic bomb. Postmodernism is the movement in literature, visual arts, music and drama which rejected the Victorian standards of how art should be made, consumed and meant (Heartney 1). Dr. Atomic has different aspects of opera that have differed from the Victorian standards making it postmodern. A key characteristic of postmodernism is that ...
Body Art and Ornamentation
Body art and ornamentation
For centuries, the human skin has hugely been used as a culture identification and expression. People across the universe honor their culture through skin and body art language to communicate about their beliefs and values. This has attracted interest and much attention among anthropologists since the early 1900’s (Eriksen, 2001). The reason behind skin inscription highlights a central issue to anthropology and other related disciplines. This is because the skin decoration and ornamentation has expressed the boundary marks between different societies. It has further represented individual and societal experiences among people across the globe. ...

I was oblivious of the fact that tattoos existed during my younger years. This is probably because I had never seen anyone with a tattoo in high school. Eventually, when I joined college, I met a classmate who got a tattoo. Later on, the person whom I dated happened to have a tattoo. Tattoos then started popping out at me giving me exposure with those two people. I noticed that more and more students in Campus had tattoos embedded in their skin. I began to develop an interest in tattoos though I had initially been opposed to them. Opposing ...

These characteristics may include a crooked smile, misshapen nose, eyes the wrong size or any other imperfections that are not significant. It can be a completely natural occurrence that does not have any adverse effects beyond altering what a person wears and makeup and they buy. Most of the population simply makes accommodations for these undesired characteristics. If someone feels she has short legs she may just wear high heels and an imperials waist to give the illusion of longer legs. A man with a ...

People posses the unique skill, which separates them from other species. It is called verbal communication. It helps people to transmit their thought from one person to another as well as to share their experience, to teach and to learn. The science would have never been on such a level without verbal communication. Yet even the largest vocabulary cannot guarantee the full interpersonal understanding. There are many other factors, which influence the communication. They are for example body adornment, influence of touch and so on.
The communication starts with understanding of its needs. Abraham Maslow developed a whole hierarchy ...
Human mutilation is an exercise that is historic in Asia Europe and in every continent, having a cultural attachment to it. While a large portion of the population has tattoo, one aspect that many tattooed people face is that they are looked at as taboo or evil, just because they have body art. Nobody wants t be treated like that, and yet we are told tattoos are more common now than they have been in the past. People wear tattoos for everything from art appreciation to cultural purposes. There are even some people that commemorate a specific event in their lives through tattoos. The idea of tattoos for many individuals is still considered taboo, this is the reason why Rachel ...
“Tattoos No Longer a Kiss Of Death in the Workplace”
When it comes to writers that take risk in the work that they write, Rachel Hennessy has proven that she is not afraid of taking a risk to do her job the way she feels is the best. While many people think of tattoos as a taboo subject of discussion, she was willing to dedicate her time to making a top quality article on the idea of tattoos being accepted in the workplace. While the article was well written and highly informative, this article was a risky one to write, because in many aspects, the idea of tattoos is ...
Tattoos are not what they used to be. I’m not sure if the years of mainstream print, social, advertising, and published media hasn’t a clue of what the ink means, or they just don’t care. And it shows. It bothers me that tattoos haven’t been explained well to a world that no longer uses them effectively. Sure there are remote places that still abide the traditional values of it, but the grand majority does not. As a product of recycled messages and tangled motivation, I can only explain why I cannot have any permanent tattoos.

The case of Newton in the police force presents modern day ethical concerns in the management of the Y generation. This generation of employees are more aggressive, assertive and cognizant of their rights. However, even in light of the new approach adopted by employees, the manager must maintain a balance between the organizational concerns and the employee demands. It is this paper’s contention that Newton is a problem employee. One in as much as one would want to exercise his rights, the right comes with a duty. The employee in his ordinary daily engagements must appreciate rights and ...
In the article entitled “Tattoos are not indication of crime, drugs” written by Ryan Grounds, the author was actually responding to an opinion relayed by Santiago Munoz, who asserted that “tattoos defined people as criminals and junkies” . The donning of tattoos has evidently incited diverse opinions. Grounds’ contention was that tattoos are mere expressions of art and should not be construed as symbols of criminal or maladjusted behavior. One shares the same assertion of Grounds in signifying that tattoos are personal expressions of promoting art in the form of worn visual patterns.
Tattoos, by definition, are marks in specified “( ...
The Tattoo (Ta Moko)
According to myths from maori tattoos originated from a love affair of Mataora and Niwareka. Unfortunately, the two lovers had a fight and Mataora beat Niwareka. Mataora was filled with guilt after beating her lover and he went running after her. He was successful to arrive at her father’s realm but his face was dirty after his journey (Gemori 1). Niwareka’s family mocked him for his untidy appearance. After long persuasion to Niwareka’s, he was forgiven and was taught the art of tattooing and Taniko by Niwareka’s father. The two lovers went back to the ...
In an organization, before the policies are implemented concerning the appearance and the codes of dress to develop by an individual, a firm should determine how the employees and customers will react to these interests of body arts like tattoos and piercing whose popularity has been gained among the American young people in the recent two decades. The current reports from the employment centers shows that almost 40% of the young generation aged between 18 years and 29 years do not hide these body arts especially tattoos in the work places and more particularly young people are not adherent ...

Abstract
Society is an integral part of a man’s life. To be a part of a society, one has to fulfil societal expectations. These expectations require a person to behave in a certain way and to live a certain lifestyle. In other words, these expectations form the norms of the society. To be accepted in a society, it is important to follow these norms. Actions that lead to breaking of these norms are called deviant behaviour or deviance. Deviance leads to outcast from society. Having tattoos is considered one such deviance. This paper talks about prevalence and importance of ...
It is with the heavy heart and the attitude of someone who has always resided in the western world, that I find the purpose of tattoos to have been blemished. The idea of Tattoo that I am measuring is between two extreme ideas: people, and tribes. People treat tattoos as an expression of individuality; tribes utilize tattoos to be recognised as a unit. What either group has in common is a sense of symbolism by using the body as a medium.
Regardless of time periods, resources, or location, the value of tattoos between western people and aboriginal tribes do ...
I once witnessed deviance in a society where tattooing was forbidden. This was a story of a young man who was influenced in the practice by his peers. He was living in a conservative society where his parents brought him up to be a pious man. The strong foundation that had been established in his life could have been an assurance that their boy will never be influenced into deviant acts. They never took time to tell him some of the practices prohibited in his society and mainly thought they will be automatic to him. This changed when he ...
Te Pehi Kupe's "Self Portrait."
The two portraits of Te Pehi Kupe present a sharp contrast on how different cultures view an individual. When first viewed they seem very different. However, when the aspects of context come into play the similarities are abundant. By examining each of the aspects of context one by one these similarities can be brought into sharp focus. Both portraits were completed in about the same year, at the same place and of the same subject. Both portraits may even have been created at the request of the same individual. The differences arise from how the artist portrayed the subject. ...
The consideration that many make with regard to individuals who choose to have body art, tattoos and piercings is that they are scary or, in some way, less sophisticated than those who do not. Historically speaking, this is an extremely modern day controversy as originally, in western culture, tattoos were prominently associated with naval men but today, they are more commonly an aesthetic decision to indelibly mark the body with an image. Although many claim that their tattoos represent various things of importance to them, they lack the discreetness of their naval predecessors and body art ...
The tattoo is an incredibly diverse form of body art. Today, in 2011, there are infinite designs of tattoo available; in fact, the possibilities are endless. Tattoos can provide a form of expression, a sense of identity, or simply a picture of beauty. However, despite their versatility, people who wear them are faced with a great deal of prejudice. This prejudice dates back to when tattoos were worn, almost exclusively, by less salubrious members of society. The prejudice is lifting slowly, but there is still a long way to go.
The negative associations with body art of this kind ...

Communication in life happens through various means and methods that convey different meaning to different people. Communication it is asserted can be either verbal or non-verbal. Language is the medium through which various ideas and messages are conveyed in the process of communication. In the field of arts and architecture, communication happens in a different way that in most cases does not convey a message or idea directly as with the other cases in most situations. In many occasions, it requires an in depth analysis that has been termed by others as the ‘‘third eye’’ that can enable one ...

Teen Gang Violence in the Community
Teenage gangs sometimes called juvenile gangs have been a historical problem in the United States (US). That is because some change in society starts the rise or the fall of certain types of gangs and also affects their membership numbers. One of the causes in the US has been immigration which causes two basic types of gangs to band together: the local teenagers already living in the area and the new teenage immigrants to the area. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) defines the difference between street gangs and the neighborhood or local ...

I am a consumer and a creator of art in my Christian faith although I consider myself more of a consumer than a creator. I am consumer through my admiration and appreciation of Christian art that illustrates, portrays, and supplements tangible forms of Christianity principles. I consume Christian art by having pictures that portray Biblical events and figures. I also watch many Christian movies and plays. I also sing and worship God through Christian music and in the process considers myself a creator and a consumer.
The arts have a very significant role to play in my worship and ...
Abnormal psychology deals with unusual patterns of thought and behavior that are considered as a mental disorder. Scholars and prominent academicians have attempted to explain the psychological and biological causes of mental disorders. Abnormal psychology can be classified as normal, abnormal and supernormal. Clinical psychology and psychopathology are some of the branches of medicine that deal with abnormal psychology. It is a complete departure from the traditional and archaic methods of diagnosing and treating mental disorders. A case in point for these treatment methods was the trephining method. Stone Age physicians believed that evil spirits caused mental disorders. They ...

Anthropology has done much for religion by comparing religious opinions and cultural practices across social organizations, concluding that religion is created by human society that practice it.
Assumption of modern anthropology holds that religion is in continuity with magical thinking (Cassirer 1944:122).
God is an imaginative projection of humans as it has been observed that images of gods
worshiped by communities resemble such communities. For instance,
Xenophanes a Greek writer observed that Thracian gods were blue eyed and blond while those of
the Ethiopians are flat nosed and black (Harvey, Van A. 1997). If gods are like the people
worshiping them, then the society is worshiping itself in the disguise of religion- this argument
has not been validated by all anthropologists. But this may make much sense if ‘Emile
Durkheim’s views were to be considered. He defines religion as “projection of social values of a

Global recession is often thought of as a serious problem or threat considering that it affects an individual’s or a family’s financial capability to maintain their lifestyle. Even if people deny the effects of global recession, some are in an advanced state of panic as people deem their businesses, employment, and plans are over. In reality, the inconveniences and life-changing situations vary depending on where one is geographically located, how much of the business is at stake, and how long the financial crisis lasts. Despite the apparent doom and gloom the situation presents, there is still much ...

It is no main feat to discover that the institutions of the state, the corporation and the family are institutionally masculinist especially in societies where the patriarch is of a dominant nature. This is certainly the case in the film, ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. The main character of Lisbeth Salander finds herself consistently on the fringe of society due to her queerness and the fact that she is troubled also makes her something of a misfit. The investigation which is undertaken by Salander also exposes the hypocrisy and blatant untruths used by those companies and businessmen to ...

In the 2009 film adaptation of the Stiegg Larsson novel The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, the character of Lisbeth Salander is an enigmatic, aggressive, yet troubled girl who rebels against tremendous oppression subjected to her by the government and corporations. The film is a very interesting and fascinating example of radical feminism, as evidenced through Lisbeth Salander and the things that happen to her and the other female characters in the film (Harriet, namely).
Radical feminism showcases a society in which women are oppressed primarily by men. The patriarchy is a male-dominated society that seeks to take advantage ...
It is common for people, especially those opting for prison-related jobs, to perceive the prison as one of the most high-risk places. Such assumptions overlook the fact that compared to the number of prison wardens who die in a year, the number of prisoners who die in prisons is far much higher. It is disheartening to note that a significant percentage of these deaths are far from natural but are rather directly linked to medical neglect, sexual assaults, gang violence, and lack of rehabilitation in prisons among other causes, all of which being preventable causes. These deaths have ...
Hip-hop is a youth subculture, consisting of several interconnected components: fashion, graffiti, art, DJs, rap, and breakdance. Other elements include beatboxing, hip hop fashion and slang. Hip-hop originally appeared in the South Bronx in the 1970s (12 November 1974, to be exact), and has become a part of youth culture in many countries around the world. Since the late 1990s the underground street culture with sharp social orientation, gradually became a part of the music industry, and by the middle of the first decade of this century, a subculture of hip-hop has become «fashionable» and «mainstream». However, despite this, ...

Vitiligo is a disorder due to depigmentation of the skin. This is an acquired disorder characterized by patches of hypo pigmented patches on the skin and mucous membranes. This disorder is commonly linked to autoimmune conditions such as abnormalities of the thyroid. The immergence of prison industrial complex is one of the main reasons why there are still high rates of crime in the country. This has become like an organization or rather a department in the government, which is also proving to be beneficial to the society. We have been fooled to believe that prisons are established for the sole purpose of reducing the rate of crime in the society. However, since the inception of prisons, the rate of crime is increasing rather than reducing. Furthermore, the country is experiencing even more sophisticated criminals than it was earlier experienced (Flateau ...
Films, in and of themselves, ostensibly carry meaning (whether intentional or not) and thematic/narrative messages that are conveyed in various ways (King, 2001). The many elements that comprise the moving image and story of a film - performance, mise-en-scene, cinematography, sound, and more - are the tools used by filmmakers and actors to convey these messages. Whether explicit or implicit, the message and overall meaning of a film can be derived from a close examination of these elements. Two films that use these elements to a great extent to convey their meaning - Barton Fink and The Night of ...

I enjoyed the setting of this short story. You have given the reader a good sense of the atmosphere that exists on a surfing beach and I genuinely felt like I could imagine being there, which is a great sign. I also felt you handled characterisation well, such as that of the narrator and of the brother. The relationship between the two of them was enjoyable to observe.
In terms of story structure, I think it needs a little work. Essentially, between the beginning and the end of a story, something should have changed. In a short story it ...
