The process that I have been undertaking in writing the two texts is that of assessing the text that the author has with the audience. Rhetoric analysis is the process of analyzing text and getting the point of view of the author and trying to assess the gaps that are found in the text. This process helps the readers understand the subject that is being analyzed even better. It brings out the issues that are missing and, in the process, makes the understanding of the text clearer. This process is important in understanding the text that is under review. ...

Reflection as a student
As a student, this was quite a hard task to accomplish. First of all, it sought to look at an issue that could be considered to be abstract; an issue in which one understands it but it is quite hard to explain exactly what it is. It was confusing even to start on how to research and the kind of information to incorporate. More so, there was no much information on the same, which made the writing quite a problem.
Another challenge was that the issue ...
The main theme of the paper is creativity and how it is seen by society. The authors stresses that even though innovation is welcome in our society, it is not truly so. Innovation means change, it means the unknown. We as human beings don’t like to lose control and to try something with an uncertain ending. Something definite is what makes us calm. The author proves his point not only by his personal thoughts. He gives examples both from creative ...
This article provides a comprehensive review of the article by Lin (2002). This article addresses how media portrays racism and its influence to lifestyle and health. A sociological approach to the problem of racism is applied, arguing that the society needs to understand the different forms of racism, biological origin of racism, and its meaning in the society. Therefore, sociological concepts such as ethnocentrism, race, and ethnicity can vastly influence media’s perception on racism. The three concepts have different meanings, but are all related and can influence health practitioner’s ability to ...

Mental accounting can be said to be a set of cognitive operations that households and individuals use to organize, evaluate and keep track of their financial activities. This paper gives a summary about our current understanding about the nature of people’s engagement in mental accounting techniques. This paper concentrates on the three components of mental accounting. The first one is concerned with how people perceive and experience outcomes, and how decisions are made and then evaluated. For example, a consumer choice can be understood by incorporating value of the deal. The second component of mental accounting involves assigning ...
Complexity science is the investigation of complex adjustable frameworks, "the numerous patterns of relationships inside them, how they are supported, how they self-compose, and how results develop" (Zimmerman 2001). Complex adjustable frameworks are densely joined networks of co-operating agents who acclimate by changing their principles, and subsequently their conduct, as they increase experience. Specialists have been creating multifaceted nature based public health and health care administration devices, and methods drawing on a bigger literature of many-sided quality based organizational administration hypothesis.
Complexity science is still in its early stages, and is multi-faceted, reflecting distinctive roads of study. The avenue ...
The writers in this article are trying to distinguish the words ‘skills’ and ‘strategies’ which are often confounded nowadays. A lot of people, according to the authors, either use both terms as synonyms of each other or connect them together which ruins the actual meaning of the words and the way they should be used in the vocabulary. The researchers have brought it up as a responsibility to differentiate the concepts of both the words so that both the words ‘reading skills and reading strategies’ can be effortlessly clarified by the educators .
According to the research, the term ‘reading ...
Description of Wheatley’s Essay
Margaret Wheatley’s Essay “Innovation Means Relying on Everyone’s Creativity” has two central points guiding a wealth of practical knowledge on organizational leadership gained through her experiences. The first is that organizations act in the same way as living organism. The whole of the organization can be seen as a species that will change according to alterations to environmental conditions. The second part of her thesis is “People only support what they create” (Wheatley, 2001). This means that in order to get support for new policies or changes to the organization, everyone within the organization must play a ...
A survey on America’s best companies in the book In Search for Excellence identified the best managed and also the “unexcellent” companies. The survey came up with two results that were striking. One, there was evident reversion in the mean whereby the growth and lucrativeness of the best companies did slow down after long time periods. Secondly, the “unexcellent” companies outperformed the S&P 500 by over 12%. In the 1988- 1992 period, there was a domination by reversion in the price/ earnings and price to book ratios (Clayman, 1994). Large capitalization stocks vividly outdid the smaller capitalization stocks. ...
Wang Yun’s play A Dream of Glory; talks about a woman who wants to become a man and display his powers before the world. Wang Yun, a Chinese dramatist of the eighteenth century, could have been influenced by a number of incidents that took place in China during the century. The patriarchal system must have played a dominant role in eighteenth century China where men had all the liberty to choose the life they wanted while women were confined to domestic roles. As the name of the play signifies, A Dream of Glory can be juxtaposed to the ...
The 1960s was a period of optimism for integration. This was marked by the pressure exerted by the European Economic Community, which demanded rapid integration. According to Hoffman, integration is “a vindication of the nation-state as the basic unit” (Hoffman, 1966, p. 157). The integration process involves a series of bargains between sovereign states, which pursue the national interests. This view is often labeled as intergovernmentalism. For every student of world order the critical issue is usually the fate of the nation-state.
Considering the nuclear age, it is evident that the fragmentation of the world in to a multitude ...
Why do Drug Dealers still live with their Moms?
This chapter explains about the culture of drug which explores a fascinating perspective concerning about drugs in an extremely poor south Chicago neighborhood. It has also observed the daily activities and cause or effect actions with those long-drawn-out individual behaviors. The main concern of this chapter is to prove the mistaken misconception for those who are drug dealers and produce lots of money. It also describes about the incredible issues and troubles that have occurred with youths who have turned to the streets as they don’t have an option or parent to contribute in drug dealing. According to ...
Abstract
The paper delineates and evaluates Eric Garner and Michael Brown Cases as well as unwarranted and excessive use of force. Garner was killed due to selling untaxed cigarettes while Michael Brown was a suspected robber. In both cases, the targeted were unarmed, and I think a re-evaluation of the use by the police force. Two different viewpoints persist in each of the cases. In the Garner case, he had been unable to breathe and choked to death. I think that the officers had no right to punish him with death because a man drinking and driving has no intention ...
An individual is the basic unit of society for most Western democracies. As such, laws and the execution of laws (one form of justice) in these societies focus on individual rights. Justice can be seen as two parts. Justice is one sense is reparations, or punishment that a society inflicts upon an individual. This essay looks at texts of Martin Luther King, Sigmund Freud and Thomas Jefferson in order to ascertain each of their guiding philosophies on what consisted of individual rights and justice. Each of them falls in line in a very particular philosophical school of thought with ...

Reading Reflection: “It All Just Clicked: A longitudinal Perspective on Transitions within University”
The article I am read is a longitudinal study from a scholarly journal. The researchers were interested in the transition of students in a university educationally, socially and psychologically. They state, “Much of this has concentrated on the first year of university study, and has focused on investigating students’ knowledge of, and engagement with, a new learning community” (Hazel et al. 2014). The aim of this study was to ...
Introduction:
The article talks about how the different ethical perspectives in the most modern world have lead to different answers to many problems. It seems that everything can be justified using the modern ethical theories as promulgated by John Stuart Mills and Immanuel Kant. It is the approach, or the perspective of looking at the things that leads to a different answer every time. In other words, there is no definitive answer to the ethical dilemmas. For example, the author of the article cites the example of closure of General Motors plan in the United States of America. He states ...
Rationale
It is apparent that the entire healthcare system is grappling with nursing shortages-a phenomenon that is characterized by improper nurse-patient ratios. This has adamantly hampered the quality of care provided and adversely affecting patient outcomes and satisfaction. According to the American Nurses Association, proper staffing and hence patient-nurse ratios is an integral aspect in improving the quality of healthcare provided. High nurse-patient ratios means that nurse have to deal with huge numbers of patients leading to clinical errors, clinically acquired infections or premature discharges from hospital. This leads to high readmission rates and increased hospital costs due to recurrence ...

Andy Pazstor of the Wall Street Journal reports in his article "Pilots Rely Too Much on Automation, Panel Says" that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) commissioned a study which determined two hazards to airline passengers. The first is that commercial airline pilots have become too dependent on automation, or the so-called autopilot. As a consequence, pilots are said to have "poor manual flying skills" or poor decision-making and are unable to adjust to changes in cockpit technology. The second hazard is "inadequate training" by commercial airliners that the FAA believes impede the pilot's capacity to fully master ...

In his paper, Notes of a Painter, Henri Matisse presents the idea that art should be able to speak for itself and should present itself, in a way, that a context is not mandatory to appreciate the art piece. He says that expression does not lie in passionate human face or violent movements. He believes the entire setting in a picture is expressive and everything plays its role in projecting the image of the artwork. So if something is not useful in a picture, it obviously means that it is harmful. He believes that expression lies in the very ...
The article talks about the use of computers in auditing and fraud detection. It introduces a new term “Inductive Logic Programming” that is under development these days in order to detect fraud even before they occur. It relies on mathematics algorithms and programming to detect suspicious patterns and report the fraudulent activity before it occurs. For example, during bad weather, very few people leave their homes, and if during such time a card from that area is used, it will report it as a suspicious transaction. This is not new, currently many banks throughout the world use “Neutral Networks” ...
Introduction
The narrative by Frederick Douglass presents an argument against slavery. The theme of the narrative revolves around this issue and to a large extent, Douglass seeks to portray the negative impact that slavery has to the development of the society. According to the narration, although the slaveholders thought they were benefiting from the practice, the real fact was that they were hurting themselves more than they thought.
Discussion
Douglass thinks slaveholding has a damaging effect to both the slaves and to the slave owners. He describes the slave owners as having irresponsible and corrupt power. This, he argued, had an ...
Although both studies are informative, the qualitative information provided by Saint et al. (2010) appears to be more difficult to understand than the quantitative information provided by Daud-Gallotti et al. (2012), most likely because of the differences in the nature of the data. Because qualitative information contains descriptive personal opinions from the participants, I find it difficult to use it for determining clinical practices based on that information. For example, it is mentioned that successful leaders were inspirational, but that does not provide the reader with sufficient guidelines to become inspirational.
Quantitative information appears to be more objective, so ...

The essence of academic writing basically relies on the capacity of a learner to become more knowledgeable about the things around him through research. That is not all; it also includes the capacity of one to become more expressive in presenting his own ideas and understanding based on how he has gained knowledge about particular issues that he has desired to explore. Personal expression is an important aspect of academic writing. While one reads through the thoughts of others, he is expected to become more expert in a specific issue thus giving him the ...
Robinson’s article “On Various Kinds of Thinking” explores the philosophers’ perspective of intelligence verses the contemporary view of intelligence. The shaping of human affairs borders on the manner in which we think. The philosophers held the opinion that mind is separate from the body and it influences human reasoning. While this has been the view passed from one generation to the next, Robison seems to hold the view that the body and the mind function together. Thus, when the body is sick, the mind would be sick.
In one way or the other, the longing of a person ...

The article, “Predicting Human Brain Activity Associated with the Meanings of Nouns” was written by Tom M. Mitchel, Svetlana V. Shinkareva and their five associates. The article was published in Science in May 2008. It outlined a computational program that predicted which parts of the brain were stimulated and would respond to certain words and images, or certain stimuli. I found several concepts of the article very interesting. For example, the basis of the article’s studies was founded on creating a computational framework subject to linguistics. In layman terms, a grid of the mind was drawn up, based ...

There have recently been increased incidences of mothers harming their newborn babies intentionally. This might appear to be very bizarre given that a mother is naturally expected to show extreme care and sensitivity to her newborn baby. The article “Good mothers, bad thoughts: New mother’s thoughts of intentionally harming their newborns” by Louise Murray and Mark Finn explores this issue from a psychological perspective.
Literature Review
Murray and Finn commence their exploration by a comprehensive literature review where several facts are brought into light. The occurrence of thoughts of harming a newborn child by a mother is mainly associated with ...
Althen in this article, offers advice to foreign students in America. The first thing they have to understand the individualism aspect of Americans. The environment they have been exposed to makes them to perceive themselves as separate thus taking responsibilities for their own situations for their destinies and life. This is because they have not been brought up in a society that is communal as such, when young, they are taught to be independent. They are satisfied by freedom. The Americans have accepted this as their culture though it is received with disbelief by non-American cultures.

Therefore, the street food sector in African cities has been growing rapidly. Constantly growing demand for food accessible to people with low income becomes a reason of creation of new jobs for urban residents. Thus, the problem of the food quality has become increasingly important.
The study about safety of street food in Kumasi, Ghana, was held in order to explore local preferences and understanding of food safety and hygiene, how ...

The research paper entitled What Students Think When Teachers Get Upset: Fundamental Attribution Error and Student-Generated Reasons for Teacher Anger, was written by Mary B. McPherson and Stacy L. Young. This paper discusses what students thought or felt when their teachers would get angry. The researchers discussed two different types of anger, one was passive-aggressive and the other was assertive. The paper also identifies different reasons for the anger. There were reasons including student misbehavior or lack of participation, and there were other more internal reasons that involved the personal life or feelings of the ...

“Cogito ergo sum” is a Latin phrase translated in English as “I think, therefore I am”. The phrase was Rene Descartes’ (1596-1650) philosophical proposition of existence in that he knew he was somewhere as an entity because of his capacity to have thoughts. The proposition has been perceived by western scholars as the foundation for all knowledge because while some objects can be queried if the belong to the realm of imagination or reality, the act of doubting ones existence is proof enough of the reality of their existence (Broughton, 109). I agree with Descartes proposal based on my ...
The recent three decades have witnessed intensive studies and researches on compositional process. Although the studies on compositional process have been a common state of the affair in traditional musicology, the analysis on this process became relevant in the early 1980’s. In an attempt to understand compositional process, Owen Jessie composed a comprehensive writing, “Evidence of Cipriano de Rore's Compositional Process”. The work presents an intensive analysis and description on some issues, concepts, and facts that define effective music composition. Besides the critics from modern scholars and music experts, Owen has proved her competence on music by presenting ...

The article is based on critics on idea of knowledge and appreciation. It tries to alienate the differences that are there in the two situations. That is, the situation of having knowledge about something and having to appreciate something play distinct but different roles on decision-making (Halley 2008). The article tries to bring out the idea of the decisions that one comes up with. It also brings out an idea of the factors and reasons behind a specific idea. Precisely, the article tries to answer the question; what decisions people make and the factors that lead to the decisions.

Charles E. Lindblom. The Science of “Muddling Through.” 1959.
Thesis: According to Charles, the United States bureaucracy uses bounded rationality and limited policy analysis in formulating regulations. He states that root analysis is a more comprehensive approach for decision-making than branch analysis. Charles, however, argues that policy makers lack the intellectual capacity to accomplish a root analysis, hence the lack of policy developments in organizations. The author states that a rational decision-making approach is not possible and explains why political maneuvering in decision-making was favorable.

According to Tan, this third wave-generation CBT is more flexible ...
Response to On Dumpster Diving
Lars Eighner’s article “One Dumpster Diving” is surprising for a number of reasons. In the first, when we throw something out, we usually consider it to be something that no longer has any value. We do not think about the lives that our garbage leads after it has been tossed. If we do imagine it, we imagine it is sitting on the mound of some great mountain of garbage in a dump. It surprised me to realize that there is a person, and actually a whole sect of people whose lives survive off what value they can get ...

It would have been more informative to provide a description, overview or definition of the framework and how this framework is to be applied, clearly and specifically in the social media platform. This is interesting to know since a historical background of the framework’s origin would provide crucial information that would assist in enhanced understanding of the topic and its applicability in contemporary settings.

Metaphors effectively convey the message about intertexuality because a reader’s understanding of the context of the words used by the writer produces the overall meaning of a written work. When the writers use metaphors, the readers are able to get the message because these words represent bits and pieces of experiences which the reader already has a knowledge of. The meaning of a text becomes fuller because of the reader’s previous knowledge. The metaphors, therefore, facilitate a greater understanding about the texts and enables the reader to enter into a discourse community. In the discussion of intertexuality, ...

Product development and product manufacturing are profoundly different and failure to appreciate the differences between the two has resulted to several fallacies that undermine planning, execution, and product-development projects six of which are discussed below:
First is the thought that high utilization of resources will improve the performance. The managers underestimate the negative effects of high utilization for example the fact that it creates queues and this effect lower product-development processes.
Secondly is the idea that processing work in large batches improves the economies of the development process. The reality is that small batches slash work in process, accelerate ...

Introduction
This paper sets out to review and analyze an article that offers definitions of and discusses the concept of quality in terms of project management. The subject article is entitled: “Some perspectives on quality” (2012), by Kailash Awati.
Article Summary:
The article opens with quoting two different dictionary definitions of the word “quality”, which – because they give no indication of how quality is measured – are dismissed by the author as inadequate. He quotes the PMBOK (Project Management Body Of Knowledge guide) definition of quality, which is: “the degree to which a set of inherent characteristics fulfil requirements”, stating that this ...

Chapter 16 of Public Speaking for College and Career is about the art of persuasion, specifically persuasive speeches. Some of the concepts that are explicitly explored in this chapter include persuasive speaking goals, the different types of persuasive speeches and the organization patterns of persuasive speeches.
In simple terms, persuasion means influencing, changing or reinforcing the thoughts, views, beliefs or opinions of people. There are three main goals of persuasive speaking. These are winning over the audience so that they assume your intended view or take an action; knowing and understanding the subject of discussion thoroughly; maintenance of ...
In Rick Poynor’s “Where Are the Design Critics?”, the author discusses several panels and literature related to design criticism – the role of criticism in design education is explored in depth. In essence, Poynor argues that there is absolutely room for design criticism, especially in written form, despite the protestations of others. Looking at this blog entry and the subsequent comments, it is clear that this is a divisive issue with many different perspectives, some presented more eloquently and even-handed than others.
According to Poynor, there is a divide between the purpose of design and the need for criticism ...

I am convinced that the main paint being relayed was that at the onset, by having decided to pursue the profession in healthcare, practitioners have already manifested a genuine and innate drive or motivation to serve. Healthcare is such a challenging and dynamic endeavor that entices only those with distinct calling for the profession. As such, valance, or the perceived importance of the work is duly ingrained. Likewise, other motivational components (self-efficacy and expectancy) become motivating drives depending on the value systems and preferences of health workers. One therefore agrees that the provision of appropriate incentive systems could make ...
The essay is a true reflection of our reality. The education system is no longer what it used to be, it is not all about ensuring that the students have achieved their goals but it is more of a business. There is an increase in the number of colleges and also an increase in the intake but the quality of education is decreasing. This is because management of the colleges is no longer interested in making the students achieve, it is no longer an up close and personal relationship it is all about the money.

Reading the bible and getting meaning out of the passages is most probably one of the most complicated things for Christians. The bible has been mentioned as one of the most inspiring books and the most read. However, despite all the worth that is attached to the bible, many people still finds it hard to not only read it but also get the most out of it. In the article How to read the bible for all its Worth by Gordon D. Fee and Douglas Stuart, they highlight some of the strategies that can be followed by a Christian ...
I do not see why it is not an acceptable solution to let such children dress as they want and play with whatever toys they want without making this contingent on a sex change process. It seems to me that this may be why there are more boys than girls with this problem: girls can get away with playing with "boy" toys and wearing "boy" clothes without it being anthologized.
Why can’t Brandon simply be a boy who wants to wear dresses and have long hair? That doesn't make him any less a biological male. This seems to ...
The Moral Instinct by Steven Pinker
Harvard Professor Steven Pinker, in his The New York article, “The Moral Instinct,” goes on to discuss his sixth or moral sense. His argument is that individuals’ moral sense can be explained using “game theory, neuroscience, and evolutionary biology.” He presented his argument as a double-sided yet balanced view of the subject on morality. He talked about moral relativism and moral illusions, as well as, the embeddedness of morality in people.
Pinker claimed that there are various explanations to morality or moral sense. What people thought of as the most admirable trait in a person may actually be the ...
This paper provides an insight on the cause of madness. It springs from disease of thought and moods of mind obtained from general intellect. Many people think that genius and insanity are intertwined. For example in the 18th and 19th century, poet William Blake wrote about the extreme mood swings he went through, which caused him to develop depression (Jamison, 1995). Most artists in the past suffered from severe mood disorders namely manic-depressive illness. As much as it is a lethal disorder, it is, however, very treatable.
In my opinion, most people with the disorder do not posses extraordinary ...
Play is important for a child’s development regardless of the background or physical attributes. Scholars have done extensive research on the topic and found at that play has an important role in learning, acquisition of social skills, creativity, emotional wellbeing, and good physical health just to mention a few. Although play has several benefits, its value is determined by the socio-cultural, historical, educational, economic, and political factors of the society (Nahar & Corine, 2012).

Response on Post #1: Shalonda
Shalonda, your observation post was very illuminating. The authentic instructional practice using ‘Reciprocal Teaching’ was indeed an effective model that enabled students to see themselves from the perspective of the teacher, who assumed the role of a student and intentionally made mistakes to practice and develop analytical skills of the students. I strongly believe that it showed greater potentials for learning since the students were not intimidated by just being told; rather, by seeing the mistakes that were normally committed in solving mathematical problems, they took the point of view of an instructor which ...

The article that will be reviewed is “Using Higher Order Questioning to Accelerate Students’ Growth in Reading”. The main thesis of the article is about how teachers today are changing their reading instructions among their students to reflect higher level talk, writing and questioning. Teachers are now realizing the value of encouraging students to engage in higher level talk in discussing reading materials in their classes. Teachers have observed that students are gaining reading achievements since their introduction of higher order questioning. As opposed to instructions based on lower level questions and teacher-directed method of teaching, higher ...

The article describes the importance of knowing the attributes that one has. The author argues that an individual can know him/herself by judging his/her behaviour and how the other people in the society judge him/her. Understanding oneself is very important for the managers.
The articles addresses self concept as a theory of understanding self. In this case, the article highlights that individuals are aware of their weaknesses. The managers therefore have the responsibility of observing their behaviour so that where necessary, changes can be done. A slow manager is aware of this weakness. It is after one understands this ...
The theory of multiple intelligence has developed for many decades. As a matter of fact, the understanding of the human mind can be very complex; hence, it has taken decades to research and comprehend in human mind. The most studied fields to help in understanding human faculties include neurology, psychology, sociology, anthropology as well as biology. In order to understand the human mind, it is crucial to define intelligence, which refers to the ability to create products, as well as solve problems, which are valued within various cultural settings. The conceptualization of the term intelligence changes, but it is ...
